Thumbs down AMC Reveals Plans for Location/Premium Seating Pricing

Wooooow.... I haven't set foot in a AMC Theater in a long time and probably never will again after this Bullshit announcement.
If the already ridiculous price gouging for concessions, cramped parking spots and annoying people blabbing and on their phones wasn't enough.
I already rarely go to a theater. When I do, it's at Cinemark.

Smart strategy to get people signing up for A-List, which is something I have had for years so it doesn’t affect me. It’s also beneficial for the rest of us that annoying people on their phones can sit further away. Will be interesting to see how this works out.

I think the final Lord of the Rings episode was my last time in a theater. I'd already built a home theater, but the wife got me to go out with a group of her friends and their husbands. The small-town theater was nothing special - very old and with funky seating, but the owner had an in with a distributor in Boston and always had first-run movies. Generally, I just waited until they came out on dvd and watched them at home.

I almost never go to the movie theater either. I would much rather watch stuff at home. If I do go to a movie theater for something I might really want to see (something else that hasn't happened in a long time) I'll go to iPic. Not sure if it's a national chain, but they have a couple around me and they basically have normal theater seating for a few rows up front then the back is all like 2 seater recliners with plenty of space between each set. They also have a full bar and restaurant which you can order from while watching the movies.

The rear seats are more expensive, but it's worth it since we rarely go to the movie theater.

Btw, I do find it a bit funny that the folks that rarely go to theaters started this thread and chime in just to say that they almost never go. Obviously you’re not their target audience/market.

I generally like the theater experience, enjoy seeing movies when they come out, and it makes for a laid back date night/something to do. Last year I watched something like 35-40 movies in theaters. It was awesome!

As I’ve said before in the movies thread, there’s nothing (for me) like watching a good movie from the comfort of my home. Will never go to the theater again, and I watch a few movies every week. There’s so much good stuff streaming these days.

Amazed it took them this long.

In any industry, there is always a market for a more premium experience.

I still enjoy going to the theater but it's at most a few times a year. Has to be a legit movie like Top Gun 2 or Ford v Ferrari were. If you don't watch those types of movies in the theater you're missing out.

Same. I have a massive TV and surround sound, a great couch, and it's just me and the people I want there. Also my kitchen bathroom and dry bar are just steps away.

The reason I stopped going is they could no longer compete with the home experience.

^ This.

I found that quality speakers, a sub or subs sized and placed for the space, full-room sound treatments, calibrated audio and video, and the optimal seating distance from the screen made for a superior viewing experience.

I'd go more if the idiots that run these theaters stop with the louder is better. My ears bleed at most theaters that have the sound system cranked all the way up belting out distorted sound.

Also, one of the times I went to the theater, I got to experience a realistic fight. Unfortunately, it wasn't 3D nor part of the movie. It was some idiot parents that took their newborn baby to an action movie. The baby was crying from all the explosions and heavy sound effects. A family sitting near them got tired of these selfish a$$holes and complained to the theater staff; which they were asked to take the baby out of the theater. So the dad walked out with the baby, but the fresh mouthed mother kept antagonizing the family that complained. This caused the family to get up and leave. I'm pretty sure they got their money refunded.

Stadiums do it? Why can't they.

I see no problem, I'd pay more to get a seat I want, but I also don't go often and if I do, I prefer one of those VIP cinemas with the better seats/amenities.

I went on Sunday to see the M night Shaysmalam movie. It was a good break from the at home experience. I don’t buy concessions, the ticket was expensive though like $15.

Which is exactly what I have. I have been referring to it as "investment in my entertainment" ever since we built our new home 5 years ago.

How was the movie? I plan on seeing it this week, but not sure given the letdowns that he’s been having.

Did you tear down the old house and build a new one up, or was it through a new home builder?

It’s decent. I expect a twist in every movie of his that I watch. This movie didn’t have one, it was what it was. That’s probably the most disappointing thing.

Would you recommend watching it? I have A-List so doesn’t cost anything per se.
