Last Z-4 built in the U.S.

Say bye bye...
The last BMW Z4 roadster built on U.S soil (at least for now) has rolled off the production line last week...

I believe that's a file photo and it looks identical to the 3.4 Alpina in the museum. I'm told the last Z4 off the line was space gray.

The same story was run in the Greenville Courier last week.

Correct, that is not the car. The last car was a dark grey. I don't know exactly what the color is called. They brought it into the Homecoming banquet on Saturday night. It goes to the Zentrum museum.

Yeah, since the 3 series have had less problems than the Zeds...

That wasn't just an un necessary comment, it was completely retarded.

Play nice kids

Everyone knows the z4 rattles like crazy, and we all have our issues that we've chosen to fix or ignore.

My first 2 BMWs were a set - I bought a 2003 325i and 2003 Z4 2.5i. In the time I owned them, I had the ignition coils replaced under recall and a headlight bulb replaced under warranty. Neither car had any other issues, and really I didn't expect any. The two cars were almost identical from a hardware perspective, after all.

I've always felt a lot of the claims of poor build quality for the American-built BMWs is psychosomatic - they have no more problems than the others, but people make more of them because of preconceptions they have about US workers.

Mine's rock-solid and quiet as a vault at 16k miles. I'm sure that Coupes are inherently more rattle-resistant, given the extremely stiff chassis. Any roadster is going to be more prone to squeaks and rattles than a typical coupe.

I have no reliability or build quality issues with my car at all vs German-produced BMWs. I do think that some of the materials used in the Z4 are somewhat cut-rate compared to the German cars.. such as the door panels (why does the leather sag like Janet Reno's gullett, while a 3-series' panels are tighter than Jessica Simpson's jeans??), and the dashboard material, which is quite cheesy IMHO. Lots of our cars' components are sourced locally and also in Mexico (full list of suppliers is posted at the Spartanburg plant's website), which may or may not have anything to do with it - you decide.

This is a partial pic of the Last Z4, taken by Me.

And a pic of the hood sticker that says "The Last Z4"

I believe it rolled off the "line" on August 29th or 30th 2008 at 12:00pm EST.

My Z has just over 20K miles and there are no rattles or squeaks. My one and only complaint is a problem with the air bag system. Twice, since I have owned the car, I have not been able to get to the car while dining when a sudden rain storm came up. The top was down and the seats got wet but the interior did not get soaked. Got the red air bag warning light both times. Dealer has fixed it no charge and says it was a faulty relay. More careful now to put the top up everytime I park the car.

I spent all of 15 minutes on a couple 3 forums and heard more about problems with overheating and stuff not working than I have ever heard on here.

The cars built at Spartneburg have a lower percentage of problems from what I remember. Just because it is built in the US doesn't mean it is crappy (only when it is designed in the US and the companies try to save money by cutting corners)

Passion? Who has passion for what? I was just saying that calling something 'lesser quality' because of where it is built is a stupid comment, especially when it is not a true comment in the first place.

I agree about the recycled basketballs used for the dash, but I'm conflicted. I've had leather dashes on convertibles before and they always split over the long term, and I think that's what BMW was trying to avoid. I've considered having the dash recovered (I'm about 90% certain I'm going to "retrofit" extended leather when I add lumbar support to my seats), but it would bug me if the cheesy stuff held up better.
