Not sure how you'd think that. The 997 to 991 was a big departure in proportions and size. The biggest change since 993 to 996. The 992 is an evolution of the 991; not very different.

Perhaps proportions and size changed but imo the 991 and 997 still look very similar, with the 991 of course representing the more modern evolution. You could park them next to each other and it would be obvious that that were the same model albeit different generations. The 992 though (really the rear is what I am talking about) looks completely different imo. The rear end is much more rounded, the tail lights have a thin bar connecting them, and the Porsche logo is not affixed to the bumper anymore.

I'm honestly surprised you think the 991 looks more different from the 997 than the 992 does to the 991.

I think they'll figure it out and make some marginal improvements as they go. This mule (possible GTS?) already has a much more aggressive looking front. Plus the rear we saw on the non-camo turbo is looking vastly improved as well. All I really care about is how the GT cars turn out.

I honestly feel the MK2s are always the generation to own with Porsche but will be especially true with the 992.

That appears to be a Turbo S given the aerokit and squared exhaust cutouts

I agree with this entirely. The 997 is the sweet spot of the 911 cars for me. However, the carrera models aren't all that exciting to drive, at least on the street. I drove a regular Carrera and an S and just didn't think they were worth the price. I don't want my first Porsche purchase to be on a car I'm not 100% in love with. I thought the M3 I ended up with was just a better buy---and certainly in a more rare/interesting spec than most Carrera models on the market.

So do I think the 992 will be any better? Nah. The Carrera is a 2-door tourer, IMO. It's comfortable, has good power, drives well, but has slowly lost the intangible engagement factor. Carreras strike me as cars for people who want the form factor of a 911 with the driving experience of a 6/8-series coupe.

Can't say you are wrong with your description of the typical Carrera driver but I think that is mainly due to the current price of the car. I mean a base 991.2 starts at like $90k and easily hits $100k+ once you add basic options. The type of person that has that kind of money to drop on a car is likely a professional who is a bit older and expects a certain level of refinement and comfort.

I think the Porsche of today is simply different than the Porsche of yesterday. In years past, you had what, 2-3 different 911s to choose from. And even the most basic 911 was engaging. I'm not sure everyone liked that approach, but some I'm sure put up with it because it's a "Porsh". These days, with electronics making it fairly cheap and easy to tune cars as well as simply different technologies that are fairly cost-effective to use, the brand can make a car that is mostly everything to everyone. It allows Porsche to offer 6+ versions of the 911 that feel a little different than the one below it---and at the same time, charge a ton for the privilege.

I don't really like that approach, but it also leaves room for the Boxster/cayman to offer the driving experience that people expect from a Porsche sports car without having to spend dumb money on a GTS or higher level 911. From a brand perspective, it's a very tight rope they are walking.

Simply put, the days of the basic carrera being the core of the Porsche driving experience are long gone, which in some ways is a shame. Not that BMW hasn't started to do the same with the M3, however.

For me, it comes down to seating. I want a vert and 4 seats and a visceral NA engine as i have small kids and when i rented a 911 I put the eldest in the back with the roof down and he couldn't stop laughing.

So it's previous gen m3, which is super heavy and seriously expensive to run, or Mustang or 911. There's literally nothing else.

If it was just for me i'd go Boxster or 4C all day.

If you're serious about the NA engine, the current and future 911s are basically off the list as well. They're all turbos now.
