Aeromotions active wing project finished!
Hey guys,
I wanted to share the biggest project ive done so far in my life. If was a long 5 months project that was completed this last week and I was very happy with the results. Most of the stuff was in the blind, and there were many variables that could make this whole project fail since everything had to be spot on such as, the measurements, the fabrication, etc. However, I was very lucky to have the right people to help me out! Thanks a lot to my friend Thiago, who offered to develop the uprights for me, to aeromotions for giving some crucial tips on the development of the uprights and sponsoring me with the can bus unit, to APR for providing the base mount (amazing quality), to conceptautogroupla for helping me with the electric part, and all the whatsapp group members who gave me good advices and opinions! I have always wanted an aeromotions active wing in my car, as I was always a big fan of their wing and also due to the fact that the wing was an active aero. So I started to see what I had to do to make the aeromotions wing fit into the z4m trunk, since they didnt have a base mounts for our cars. First, I purchased the wing from a nissan GTR owner. Then, I measured the distance between both wing mounts, and I noticed that they were really close to the distance between APR's base mount, and decide to pull the trigger and buy one in the blind hoping that it would work. Once the APR base mounts arrived, it was time to make sure that both mounting points of aeromotions and APR would align. As you can see, I was right! [IMG] Next, I was checking how much higher I wanted my wing to be as the uprights that came from Aeromotions for the GTR was 8" tall. We concluded that the uprights for the z4m had to be 11.5" tall to be right at the roof line. ___________________________________ After checking everything, I shipped everything to my friend who was then going to combine the bottom part of APR uprights and the top part of aeromotions uprights into one, and I gotta take my hats off to him, because every single measurements was unbelievably perfect! After the development was done, I had to find a CNC shop to produce it to me, and luckily I found a company called www.parts-badger.com who gave me a really good pricing to produce only 1 set of uprights. Huge thanks to them because it was really hard to find a CNC shop to make me only 2 pieces. Their customer support was amazing and the quality was perfect! Everything measurement was perfect. this is the finished product Next I had to have my shop make me a custom plates to hold the module in place. And this is the final result!!! Also added the Varis lip together. I will be making a custom chassi mount splitter to balance the wing along with some custom canards. at the canyon cruise yesterday with some of the members here. Nice meeting you all! here is a comparison picture of Varis wing vs Aeromotions vs APR VARIS VS AEROMOTIONS APR VS AEROMOTIONS on 8/4 I will be going to buttonwillow for an open test day. I will be doing some laptime comparison with the active wing on and off. I will be recording with my gopro. Hope you guys enjoy the video!! Last edited by AriuSen; 07-10-2017 at 04:15 PM.. |

Great work!
How is it active? Where does it get the sensors from or know to go up or down? I saw the canbus box but where do inputs come from?

So the big module that you see is the sensor of when I brake or accelerate. And that will move the wing accordingly. I actually have to set up the angle I want them to be at each mode. There are basically 3 modes. 1- braking (most agressive angle) 2- cornering (middle angle) 3- main straight (flat) All of these needs to be set up. And the can bus unit, which is plugged into the OBD, is the one that measures the speed i am going. BTW The HACK , I wanted to know if you could help me out here. So basically, do you know if the z4m has a VSS sensor? Aeromotions sent me a can bus unit that i plugged into my OBD, and from my research the BMW can high and can low is the number 6 and 14. The can bus unit is suppose to be flashing red, which means its getting data, but I am getting green light, which means the canbus is only getting electricity. I beleive the can bus unit was sent to replace the VSS sensor which is how they used to do years ago. Any tips? This is the manual in case you want to take a look |

Electric engineering is above my paygrade. My mechanic @EMW maybe can answer some of that.
That is an insanely cool system and the amount of work that goes into it to make it work on our platform is very impressive. Like I said. Whoa.

Z4M uses abs wheel sensors to calculate vehicle speed. The speed signal travels through CAN (that is how the dash gets the speedometer reading). I know this since I created some test CAN bus program a while back to reverse-engineer the ECU at some point.
If you search for E46 Can Bus Project, you may find which IDs carry the vehicle speed - if the controller you use is configurable down to that level!

Worked on the wires to test the wing.
Worked fine! Btw I found the can high and can low for our cars. It?s at the cluster connector pin #16 and 17 If you guys want to ever install solo DL to get your track data such as speedometer, those are the wires you want to use. Yellow/brown being can low and yellow/red can high. Now this is the wing doing a pre test whenever I turn on the car

Splitters done too with aluminite. Not sure if that?s how it?s spelled lol
This is a temporary splitter. I will be making in a different material that I can not share right now, but will do once I have it ready. I was trying to copy the shape from the z4 gt3 but noticed it was too hard to get it right. I will be using a e46 bumper to make the shape in my next splitter. For now the splitter have been holding well in 80 mph. Let?s see at the track.

Só a quick upgrade.
Unfortunately the wing didn?t work. I gotta check the wiring again. So I just turned it off. I went from 1:54.5 without aero to 1:51.7 Without aero temperature was around 60-70 With aero about 90-100. Car completely changed. Used to have a lot of oversteer but now car has a little bit of understeer. It?s amazingly planted and I can full throttle in some places that was impossible without aero. Still learning the new car and trying to get more confidence to push more. I can see a 1:49 easy in cooler weather. Another thing I noticed is the braking points. I was braking so much later now. Here is a video comparing both of my pb aero vs without aero.
