M Bumper Conversion: Ya or Na?
What are your thoughts? Should I spend close to $1,500 - $2,000 to have a M Bumper painted and installed? Is the cost really worth it? I love the way the bumper looks! But with all of the parts needed for the conversion and labor involved..what should I do? Is this too much $?

Aero bumper! Or, just trade in for the M. 1500 to 2000 is too much for a bumper.

Have you thought about installing it yourself? I think there is a DIY on here somewhere.

I've thought about this considerably myself. But I came to my senses and realized my the facelift bumper looks pretty decent as is (although I do get M-vy every so often), and that is a good chunk of cash that can be spent elsewhere for the car. I guess it just depends on your mod priorities. Cosmetic/Performance/Maintenance (if out of warranty). $1500 to $2000 for bumper is too much for me, but it sure would be nice.

The the brake duct vents and brackets are like another 100-150 for all shipped. I've got mine going in with shaved round side reflectors and I've managed to use the S.I. fender arch side reflectors on the M cover . Looks great ! Going to get it painted hopefully this month. Cheers,Vinny |

i asked myself the same question few months ago. i ended up going with aero given its uniqueness and cost. also, i didn't want to give others the impression that i was trying to pass my car off as a /m.
and fyi total cost of my aero bumper + paint + install (all new parts) = $1000 but had i found someone selling a used /m bumper already primed for cheap (like the one in the classifieds - unfortunately not local to me though), or one already in the same color as my car, i would've had a hard time saying no to that... |

I was also thinking about front bumper facelift either M or Aero but too much $$$$$$ involved. i would rather stick with OEM bumper and save $$$$ for something better. may be buying 3D LED TV with Nice Harmon Kardon Home Theater or save some more money in few years as down payement to buy apartment so at this point i have stopped spending money $$$$ on car. i just enjoy riding without any upgardes or facelifts etc.

As far as POSER status goes, I could care less what others might think in that regard. My Sport seats aren't embossed with the M logo....nor my M steering wheel. I simply view these parts as either styling, cooling or preference to feel items and nothing more. Probably one of the reasons I shaved the M side markers and went with teh S.I. variety.....to keep some of the original things I DID like. Here's what I'm talking about>>> The start of the surgery steps to install S.I. side reflectors into an M cover.. Test fitment prior to plastic welding........ Clear Euro lenses test fitted for perfect flushness..... I personally don't care for the lower fang shape of the M variant....but wanted the brake cooling effect without going to the dated look of the Aero. This alone probably places me in a minority status, lol. |

So save up a little more and take the plunge like I did The M is worth it for so many more reasons other than the front bumper!

Just think, upgrading to the M is like getting all the ///M parts (bumpers, hoods, suspension, exhaust, LSD, rims, ENGINE, etc...) for 5-6 grand; versus 1 grand for just the bumper. Later, when you sell it, it should still fetch a premium over a non M that's been "upgraded" with bits and pieces of the M car.

How is a non performance part an upgrade ? Aside from in this case...brake cooling ducts. I will say,in my case......I would not want the M drive-train specifically due to engine costs when time to do major services. We can drive the S.I. motor to hundreds of thousands of miles before we'll need an internal rebuild....if at all. Historically......no M engine does well after major miles exposure. Therefore...I just can't see the Z4M or coupe variant holding its value once there are miles attached due to the forced need for a rebuild. I bet it'll all be a wash...for both variants in the end.....modded or stock. |
