So I finally got some time over the past week to take my SSK apart and adjust the washers as per onebluemcm's install. Let me tell you guys, I never thought such a small piece could make such a big difference. Shifting is so much smoother now and a lot more precise. Anyone doing this install by themselves should follow this DIY step by step. Great job onebluemcm, great attention to detail.

Dude, thanks - really appreciate the comments!
Sorry you had to go through all this again - that had to be a dreadful thing. Been there, done that with other things. But, even after having to pull it all apart, I am betting, from what you said, you are thinking it was worth every last drop of sweat and blood.

I was totally dreading it while I was doing it, but once it was done, it was totally worth it, huge difference. Still in shock every time I drive it! Thanks again!

Finally got around to doing the install on this yesterday.
The things that I did differently than above are: I dropped the rear tanny mount. It only drops an inch or so, but any additional clearance definitely helps with this job. I also dropped the exhaust in one piece rather than try to get to the bolts between the x-pipe and section one. Popping the rear carrier mount out as per above was a brilliant idea. Make sure you go easy prying it out though.... the retainer bracket metal is easy to bend out of shape. It made this a MUCH easier job.

onebluemcm -Thanks so much for the great DIY- details were excellent . I did my install yesterday on a hoist so I can appreciate much more what you endured to complete the install while detailing it for the rest of us!! Thanks again. I did drop the tranny mount for a little more clearance but the most challenging was the front shifter piece with pin and the rubber shifter boot- didn't pay attention to your instructions and tried to install with the shifter in place - dropped trans. again and installed on lower shifter before putting up in place--Thanks again

After being under the car a good amount of time yesterday, my hat is off to anyone who does this without a lift. You guys are amazing.

Nice to hear that several others have been getting around to installing their AS SSKs. Such a great mod for this car - gets better with time too.

Stupid question -- is there any greater concern about missing a shift with an SSK as the overall travel is less? I'm really horrified at the notion of missing a shift and hearing sickening metal crunching sounds.

the only catch is a poorly installed SSK, which might give you more trouble.

I'm finally getting around to install my SSK. I remember reading a post about an easier method of installing by removing the the rear bushing from the car and installing the pre-assembled shifter as a unit. But I can't seem to find it now. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Finished the install last night! Thanks again for the great instructions. I still have to clean up and reinstall the exhaust so I haven't had a chance to drive it yet. Does feel very precise though.:thump:
5/27 - First day of driving today. All I can say is awesome! I immediately had to sign up for a track day. I can't wait! Great job guys. Last edited by Barryb97; 06-01-2011 at 12:43 AM.. |

Been a loooong time since I've been around the forum. Just poking around, nice to see some people got some use out of this. Hard to believe it's been nearly 5 years ago that I did this - car has had entirely too little road time since then. Definitely gets harder with kids and a 2 seater...
Long term update - why not - the AS SSK is as perfect now as it was when installed and remains one of the best, if not the best, mod I've done to the car so far.
