Z4MR to E90 M3

A worthy change, or a stupid mistake?

Worthy change, I did the same from my coupe, the need for a backseat took over the need for the rare coupe.

Been struggling with the same thing. I would be going to a four door. For now, I'm using a cheaper four door for shuttling baby and keeping the roadster for fun drives. I just don't think I'd enjoy the M3 to its full potential when my daughter's on-board. And the daycare to office commute is short, slow and full of lights (unlike previous commute). That said, fun rides are in short supply, so I rarely enjoy the roadster these days. But I plan to keep it 'forever' so I'm playing the long game.

I don't think it's a stupid mistake either way you go. Just have to weigh why you're making the change with other options. That V8 sure is nice.

Worthy change. I own a couple and an E90 M3. I enjoy both. The E90 M3 is less raw and a lot more of a GT car. The S65 engine is truly a work of art. It's so smooth even up top approaching redline. The sound is very intoxicating. Compare to the S65, the S54 has a more coarse character but it all adds to the raw experience.

I went the exact opposite. Basically, daily driving (<10 miles to work, hauling the dog, etc.) the M3, while doable, wasn't for me. I was constantly having to worry about the dog messing up the interior, keeping it spotless, and the wear and tear from everyday commuting.

I wanted a real sports car for weekends and track days, and a DD for everyday. Sold the E90 and bought a Subaru WRX wagon for DD and now the M Coupe for fun.

The E90 is a lot "easier" to drive for every day use, a lot more comfortable, hard to tell how fast you're going it's so smooth. If you want that kind of sedan, then it's a fantastic car.

I'd love to have all 3, just not enough garage space for them, among other things

Yeah, unless Fl has no child endangerment laws, you can't do much of anything fun in a car with her in there

Paint me pink and tickle me crazy but I would get an E39 M5 in that situation. For around town spirited driving an M3 would be great, but with the kids, the M5 is better to drive slow in my experience. The S62 has more torque than the S65 (S62 has more than 40 more ft-lbs than the uprated S65 in the M3 GTS) and is a very comfortable car. Maybe you NEED the newer looking car but, I would really consider the M5. For the cost, you could get a really clean example, and maybe a cheap 2-seater alongside it for a weekend fun car without the kids.

The exterior dimensions are even about the same, but the E90 was designed as coupe, the E39 as a sedan, and I think the E39 looks a little better in sedan form. But that of course, is merely opinion.

OP should speak up as to why the change is considered, I mentioned kids first. OPs reasons may be different. Good opinions here, though, comparing driving experience. If that's all OP is considering, it's different from needed 4 seats or 4 doors.

I did the opposite. I got 2 seats because of the kids. More time alone or at least with only 1 kid. Or only the wife.
