Ford Mustang alternative to BMW soft top motor and pump

This is buried in various threads across Z4 forums, but I feel it deserves its own attention. The going rate for a bmw soft top motor and pump is $650 at the time I'm typing this, but there is a Ford alternative that works just as well. I recently relocated my motor and pump to the trunk using the Mustang part as follows, and it works great and is faster at raising and lowering than stock:

I just finished up my roof top motor relocation this weekend as well, I utilized the Ford Mustang motor/pump assembly too.
I'm attaching pictures of the pump assembly I used in case it helps other people out. I received the assembly with some of the wiring attached, including a disconnect so I reused that as well.

Some basic info on the pump I used:
  • Purchased for $180 off ebay.
  • It was listed being for 2008-2014 Ford Mustang.
  • Made by Hoerbiger (same as the Z4).
  • Pump assembly showed part numbers S109024 and HB80069-002P.
  • Electric motor shows part numbers 3M5042, 1090069, and HB80006-019C.
  • The fluid reservoir is about 2x the size of the BMW one, but they're interchangeable so I put the BMW reservoir on the Ford pump.
  • For wiring, Mustang red to BMW green/grey and Mustang yellow to BMW blue/grey.
  • The banjo bolts on the mustang pump are the same size as the BMW, however the inlet/outlets are on the opposite side. Meaning the holes in the bolts are on the bottom when screwed in instead of the top. I'm not sure if this matters but I reused the BMW bolts just in case.
  • The pump outlets were labeled 11/13 on one and 12/14. This runs backwards from BMW's setup (at least for my 2003)! I initially plumbed it per the numbering on the pump and it ran in reverse, the open button closed and vice versa. So I had to switch the hydraulic lines so the 11/13 were attached to the pump at 12/14 position, and the bmw lines 12/14 were at the 11/13 position on the pump. Once done, it runs correctly.

I can't believe that it's been over 2 months and no one has commented on your post. This is excellent news for anyone who needs or may need to replace their OEM pump.

Can you post more pictures of how you mounted it in the trunk? Possible wiring/plumbing diagram?

Btw were you able to relocate the pump without taking the top out? Seems like there’s a lot of info on the boards suggesting it’s possible but no definitive DIY. And I don’t see that shop in Europe who does this offering their trade secrets anytime soon.

Great find! I am in the processing of sourcing one of these motors/pumps. This might be a dumb question, do they come with fluid already in the tank, or do we have to add it? The one I found, is missing the hydraulic line bolts and the tank looks empty. They are asking $125 for this.

BMW Z4

Hi

to replace the motor you have to take top off if you want to relocate the motor to trunk?
where did you mount it in the trunk?

I successfully finished the job last week. It it weren't for the excellent resources online, this would have not been possible. Huge thanks to Shipkiller for the incredible instructions. As expected the OEM motor was soaking wet and corroded. I am extremely happy with the replacement Mustang motor. It is very fast at opening and closing, and was a fraction of the cost of the BMW part. It even came with a bracket to mount it on. Relocating to the motor to the trunk was very simple, and did not require any additional wiring or extensions. My replacement motor/pump already had plenty of hydraulic fluid in the tank, so I did not need to add.

Just to correct the original post, reversing the positive and negative terminals on the motor, will either cause the top to open or close. Not reversing the hydraulic lines. So if you press the open button and the top closes, just reverse the positive and negative terminals.

If anyone has any questions, I would be happy to help.

The motor and pump can be relocated to the boot without having to remove the hood from the car. Its a bit of a struggle to get to the motor and release it from its stock location as its held in by zip ties that have to be broken by brute force. Here is a link to a very good guide on a UK forum with pictures. https://zroadster.org/threads/z4-roo...to-boot.19256/
Most motors can be revived back to working condition by soaking them in diesel to free them up, general clean and they spring back to life. To lift the plastic container that contains the motor/pump in the original location I used a long bar forced inbetween the container top and its body and using a built up pivot point in the trunk forced the container upwards till the zip ties snapped, it was easy to lift it up and out into the boot, the cables and lines are long enough to repostion it at the side of the boot in the recess next to the trunk firewall.

I just attempted this over the weekend.. I wasn't getting the whole unit out but now that I read it on the desktop, it says pop the top off.. going to retry now that the weather is nicer and not 100 degrees in the boot. Will try just the top and hopefully that'll get the motor out

Probably the happiest day of my life... I haven't had working top since like 2012/13. Finally get this stupid motor fix. Going to get some diesel fluid when I got time to soak it...

I think mine is done.. I soaked it for 10 hr on weekend, looks cleaner but I order a motor just in case it does not revive. I'll resoak it again tonight.

I figure if Im able to repair the original motor and have it as a spare when the replacement comes. Anyone actually repair the motor before ?

YES, top up and tray remove, through the trunk, i had to haul my big belly into the trunk.. u can reach it.. made it 1000% easier

Long arm helps. I'll measure the 2 screw driver I used to pop the top open.

Thank everyone that did it... else I had no place to remove the top

Seeing it like that really makes you scratch your head why BMW designed it like that ... makes no sense!

Anyone know the size of bolt that holds the electrical body to the reservoir top ?

Mine allen head screw is so rusted in, a whole week of soaking in blaster and Various other rust penetrating spray isn't moving it.. Looks like I'm going to have to cut it off and get new allen screws for it.

Allen head is all rusted in and rounded... sat in water too long
