I got to test drive one of these last year at a BMW event (drag + slalom + braking) and I was thoroughly impressed with it. It felt very much like a driver's car considering its size and felt faster than my F25 N55 with JB1. The M-sport seats were more comfortable than our factory Z4M seats lol. I think you'll be quite happy with it.

Cause the one X3 I was driving for few days (a dealer' loaner, maybe 2015 or so) felt completely disconnected from the road with extremely light steering wheel. I was turning and had no clue where the car would go and if I needed to correct or not. Regular 3 series didn't feel much better either. M4 was much better but still far from my Z4M. |

Random but I actually thought my old 135is had a 'heavier' steering feel compared to the Z4 M. |

Stiffness wise I think 1-series (non active ) and Z4M steering has similar feel. Love both. |

I've driven both x3 M40i and x4 M40i....both are v fast with minimum body roll. I liked both of these. But Z4M has that rawness and driver engagement, which makes it one of the best cars in its category. Unless your tastes change, I don't think these new cars will feel better than the Z.

I picked up an X3MC as a daily and still have my Z4MC.
The X3MC is just stupid fast and pulls like a train. Speed and acceleration wise, the Z4MC will never compare to the X3MC. However, as other have said, the Z4 despite shortcomings compared to the X3MC, still has certain qualities which make it an enjoyable drive in its own right. |

I heard that G- has better version of it but has not had a chance to try it for myself yet. My wife' 128i also has heavier steering wheel than my Z4M |

Re the steering on current BMWs - I can comment because I have a 2019 328 loaner until Monday or Tuesday while my X5 is in the shop for a warranty repair. The steering is smooth and direct, but its very light with minimal feedback. My wife's 2014 328 is like that and she loves it, although I prefer the feel of a hydraulic set up as most of us here do. The car itself feels large and heavy for a 3 series, although it has decent get up and go and is reasonably eager to do so when asked. Its very quiet and solidly built, no squeaks or rattles. I did note a few seemingly rough shifts a few times when accelerating in a more spirited than usual manner.
The car has very useful features though. It will unlock as you approach it (to save all the work of pressing the button on the fob or touching the handle to unlock the car), and you can change the color of the interior mood lighting. And you can zoom the GPS to show the earth from 1200 miles out - I haven't spotted any space aliens, UFOs, Klingons or the USS Enterprise yet - will let you guys know when that happens.

Picked up the X3 M40i as a Grandkid hauler
My wife was having issues dealing with car seats in the back of her 2007 E93, so we went searching for a more practical vehicle. Found a <4K miles 2018 X3 M40i. In a straight line - it's scary fast! Cornering is surprising considering the weight and high center of gravity.
All the cameras and parking aids are spoiling me! Keeping the E93 for my daily driver and saving our ZM Roadster for sunny days, day trips and twisty roads. |

I have a friend who's leasing an X3 M40i. He also has a F80 M3 with suspension mods that he uses frequently for autocross and track. He sold his E46 M3 with a track/autocross setup to buy the F80. He also has a Carrera 4S which he admitted he's a little afraid of!
He leased the X3 M40i for a daily driver and is extremely satisfied with it. He's autocrossed it once and took it on our club's last canyon carving run. Asked if he had buyer's remorse now that the X3 MC is out, he said no, the M40i is more than enough for what he needs it for, and besides, he's already got two performance cars. I've driven the X3 MC and that thing is a monster! (I wasn't impressed with the ZF 8 speed auto though, especially compared to the DCT in my M4.) I haven't driven the X3 M40i, but if I needed a more useful vehicle, I'd probably opt for the X3 M40i rather than the X3 MC, especially because I already have an M4 and the Z4 MR.
