Check CD Error

Most of the time I use my CD player, I get a \"Check CD\" error and the cd won\'t play. None of the buttons work except the mode button. I can\'t even eject the CD. I was told by the dealer this only happens with burned CDs. Is this true? Does the BMW Certified Used and warranty cover the CD player? I\'ve got the premium sound system. Point is probably moot since I eventually want to change the head unit or get a Dice II MediaBridge. But if the CD player won\'t work, I\'m more apt to get a head unit instead. I need the CD player to listen to lectures.

Thanks.

I play burned MP3 CDs almost exclusivly in mine, also a premium Carver system. They have never given me any problems, and the ID tag info (folder, artist, song) shows on the screen. Don't know if I'd agree with the dealer, unless you are burning to a format the player doesn't recognize.

What program are you using to burn the CDs? I'm using iTunes. Do you burn your CDs at the fastest speed possible? Maybe it's the CD I am using.

It's a program called "Easy CD-DA Extractor"........... uses the LAME software for encoding MP3. I am using VBR, which sometimes is harder for certain players to read than a constant bit rate.............. and the Z has zero issues with them. I also burn at a fairly high speed, usually let the software set it. I have a HP that does the lightscribe label thing, so mostly use Lightscribe blanks by either memorex or verbatim.

Do regular CD's play? Why not connect your iPod/phone/whatev to the AUX?

Regular CDs play but those are the ones I have been getting the "Check CD" errors. Where's the Aux hole in these things? I don't see on in the front of the unit.

I tried out an mp3 disk in my '08 M Roadie with the DSP audio system. I burned it at home using Nero to burn the data cd and lightscribe the label. When I put the cd in the player with the car parked, everything worked like described above: music played, song title, artist & album title. This morning as I was driving to work, I started getting all sorts of spurious noise hits at random times out of the system. Any ideas what could cause short-duration noise spikes? I don't think it's tied to bumps in the road because it happened on smooth roads as well. Is there a maximum bit rate for playback? The mp3s I burned vary in bit rate from 96 to over 300 and it seemed the lower bit rate mp3s played cleaner than the higher ones. It may just be a problem with my audio system because a store-bought audio cd had some weird noise issues, too, just not nearly as frequent.

Loose connection?

I'm envious you guys have track names showing up. This might be an iTunes issue. I'll have to try out Nero and see what I get.

Have you turned on the text label function? When I first put the disc in, there were no track names showing. I turned on the text labels (one of the 2 buttons in the center of the panel below the cd slot) and boom, there they were. I also went to split screen on the nav system so I get the track info on the left & GPS position on the right. Also, if you press the far right button (under and to the right of the select knob) you get a menu screen that allows you to select random play mode on the disk.

If the store bought one also does it I think it's possibly the system. I use the highest quality VBR, which I think is listed at averaging about 245. I never have any issues. Mine are Lightscribe as well. Once in a blue moon the system will fail to show the ID tag, and if I forward to the next track and then back it resumes the display.... this rarely happens. It's nice having all the data showing. I can get on average around 8 regular CDs on one MP3 CD using the highest quality VBR setting. You know you can hit the select button and then scroll forward and backwards through the folders. The one thing I do not like about our player is that it won't display the CD/album cover art. I always attach that to the songs as well.

Let me try to find that button on my system. I've got the premium sound system without NAV so it might be different.

Interesting. I have NEVER seen the tag info on mine, even from a factory CD...

You have to turn it on in the system. Don't know why they have it off, and the ability to turn it on and off.

How do you turn it on for a business cd player? I've tried all the buttons and can't seem to get the tag info to display.

I checked my owners manual and it said to press the info button on my dsp system and choose the option to show the text label. This instruction was complete with a picture of the screen. Well, there is no option to do this on mine. I only have the option to set the "nav min vol."

Could this be true with M's or is there somewhere else I need to go.

Not sure. I just went out to my car, turned on an MP3 CD, hit the "info" button, and the screen gave me the option to turn "audiotext" on or off.

Hmm... I'll have to look for that info button. I'm pretty sure I don't have it. I'll take a pic of my CD player and post it up if I don't find it and we can compare head units.

Even tried it later today with a factory cd. No dice. Nothing to turn on.

I don't have pictures to post but I definitely don't have any info button on my head unit. I've burned some MP3 CDs and they play more regularly than audio CDs. I've only had an MP3 CD give me the Check CD error 3 times where as with audio CDs, about half the time.
