Unfit Family + Covid19

So I am curious who else here is having to spend more time with family members, in particular family members who do not put 1 ounce of effort into being in shape physically.

As many of us know, physical discipline goes hand in hand with mental discipline. Due to the pandemic, I am extra frustrated or annoyed by those who cannot seem to figure out that now is the time to start their journey toward wellness.

So for those of you who have chosen to live vs just exist, how do you deal with family who are active in your lives, but take no interest in their health?

I am the only one in my family of 5 who tries. The good news is my wife is trying harder, and my 2 boys will want to hopefully one day follow in my footsteps of physical discipline through sports, weights, working out etc.

But my parents and sisters could care less. Normally it bothers me but I accept it. But now while they literally have nothing better to do, there are NO excuses, right?

They need to want to change. That's the bottom line. Without that progress would be minimal.

+1

I'm fortunate to have equipment at home so I've been working out probably a bit more than normal, but many are not going to the gym or doing their normal routines because of this.

For me, I have to other wise my back starts bugging me more than normal, and I'll start feeling other aches and pains. Back issues run in my family (my dad is the same way, and my grandpa has had 3 surgeries) so at 29, this is just the beginning for me. The better shape I'm in, the better off I'll be. For me it isn't about building and becoming huge, it's about maintaining. Working out has many benefits, and for me it really helps me manage stress. Without it I'd probably be in the nut house.

^100%

Use it or atrophy. I could care less how vascular my family becomes from benching. I'm talking about basic fitness levels.

I read this today and it made me think a lot about my family and some friends - and their choice to take prescriptions or use a vice like a vape pen in my sisters case.

First thing to remember here is that everyone's journey is different. This is a touchy subject. A person would think that they want to take care of themselves but this isn't always the case. Some just don't care, some took on poor habits from an early age; whatever the case may be, ultimately, it's up to them.

I used to get extremely frustrated with my kids over the same mentality. One day I woke up and realized, they are going to do what they are going to do; whether I like it or not. Rather than be frustrated with them, love them and appreciate them while you have the time. If they choose to get in the habit of taking care of themselves, great! If not, love them, respect them and spend time with them anyway.

As others have said everyone's journey is different.

I think the problem lies in your investment into their health. What they do is our of your control. No reason to get frustrated because they don't want to hit the gym.

No to be rude, but this strikes me as the father who wants his kid to play football because he did. You want your family to join your journey, and do as you do.

Focus on doing things with your family members that they want to do, and you will find it to be joyful instead of painstaking.

i dont want to live a long life.. i want to have good life.. taking care of what you eat and doing some sports should be a favor for yourself first.. and im doing some sports quite some time and since we re all isolated nowadays, all sports activity at least for me turned into bodyweight sports.. even if most of the time i had to push myself to start training, i love the feeling after finishing a training session.. thats why i do really.. who doesnt like to be lazy anyway..

besides eating whatever you want cant make you happy anyway.. only for a short while.. but eating good things for your body and still enjoy "some not too much dirty" food sounds like perfect balance for me..

^ everyone's engine requires different levels of revving or driving to keep optimal. Mine requires a lot of pushing and quality fuel generally or else it doesn't perform well.

My parents and sisters prefer to make excuses, take prescriptions - and my youngest sister can't seem to understand what the root cause of her problems are - while she does nothing active :

You need to re-read what I wrote. My personal family is fine, wife 2 boys 8 and 20 months. Wife keeps pretty fit - boys are boys and too young to bother - of course.

No i meant my adult sisters and my parents.

People are fucking lazy and lack discipline. If its lacking in fitness they arent using it elsewhere either. Discipline is actually freeing not constrictive.

You can only lead the horse to water

Show me, don't tell me

I struggle at home myself. I get home, wife is laying in bed. Then dinner is made, we wash the dishes, and she's back in bed watching TV. I'm challenged to try to do SOMETHING. I quit adjusting MY fitness schedule as much.

Dinner is in an hour
OK, I'm going running for 35 minutes

I brought home about 10 laminated yoga routines the other day.
What's that
Yoga workouts, want to learn?
channel changes on the TV

My youngest was always in sports thru college, then he put on WAY more than the Freshman 15, and he was still living at home. Still catches for the baseball team, and the weight helps IF someone tries to slide into the plate. 260 ain't moving, especially with shins on He has a membership with me at teh gym, and even got his GF an account right before 'the Vid. But without even that bit of stuff, they can't be bothered.

Oldest who lives in the house too has a series of kettles, and his X-fit class still does things online. So 40% of my household does SOMETHING.
