Must have been a protest against human-driven cars.

It wasn't that long ago that we were being told that autonomous vehicles would be replacing human driven cars in the very near future. I think the reality is they are a long way off from being the norm.

Someone joked that the cars decided to unionize.

I have been EXTREMELY bearish on AI driving for years and years. On another forum I made a bet 5 years ago that we would not see level 5 integration with real drivers for at least 25 years, if ever. I was laughed out of the room but 5 years later we seem to have gone backwards and major companies with major cash have moved it to the "too hard' basket.

Everyone thinks everything is fixed with technological advancements but I will argue, the last 20 years, other than cell phones, we have not seen the progress we have in previous generations.

I made similar prediction on this forum about 5 years ago. I got the same response. I feel the same about EV's, they are easy tech to get on the road but they are decades from being the predominant vehicle on the road.

To me, EV's have more of a future than AI. As I am sure you have noted, my position is the market itself would change to a relatively even split between EV, PHEV and ICE but if ICE is banned, I see PHEV dominating. Public charging is a massive, massive, massive obstacle that has been severely underestimated.

Same boat here, what society is asking AI cars to do is exponentially more complex than the technology we have today. It’s like the difference between getting to Australia vs going to Mars

Another massive challenge will be insurance coverage. Who pays when AI cars crash with each other? Who’s at fault when crashes aren’t supposed to happen? Who gets sued? The car owners insurance company, then the car maker, then the software maker?

The world isn’t litigious so I don’t see any issues at all here -sarcasm-

Mercedes is the first Company with level 3 approvel in Europe, they are responsible if the vehicle comes to an accident during autonomous operations.

Only when the speed is below 37 MPH, in a traffic jam, in the daytime and with clear weather.

But if a Butterfly farts below the 40th latitude it is void?

We'll have to ask MB lawyers.

Yet where MB will cover the liability is in a sea of humans driving in stop-and-go traffic...

On a clear day.

LOL

+1 I'll take these robocars (for other ppl) any day, unless they programmed in the 'road rage' and/or 'selfish-I'm-the-only-guy-on-the-road' modules. Humans are damn annoying sometimes, esp those idiots driving.

Do you mean you will “take” the robocars as your personal means of transportation? Or will you “take” them for others to use as you drive your own ICE or EV? Are you in the class of humans you described?

Ofc the latter, I trust myself but not the majority of others.. Since many ppl are anxiously waiting for self-driving, I wholeheartedly encourage them.

Death and taxes are the only events humans have shown any success in predicting. Otherwise, we'd all be dead many times over already if all the doomsayers of the past few decades had been correct about anything.
