Clunk sound from the rear

Hi guys, I have read a few threads about this, but they all seem to be different. I have a loud clunk sound when turning or when driving from 1-10 mph. Some say its the LSD others say it some traing arm bushing. Have any of you gine through this?

Mine's done this about 1/2 dozen times, or something like it, when first turning out onto the highway near the house and jumping on it. Can never get it to repeat.
Wrote it off to the diff being cold or not getting enough oil splashed around in it yet.
I don't do that any more. I go a little easy on it for the first 5 minutes or so when cold, and haven't heard a peep out of it.

I also had a clunk sound, very seldom. While doing some work on the rear wheels I discovered by chance that the right side bracket of the rear sway bar was completely gone. For God knows how long time.
I replaced it and the cluck was cured.

^ Common. When I checked last year, I was missing a bolt on one side, and the other bracket was completely gone.

Could be the LSD as well...this is also common. If so, switch to the BMW oil with the friction modifier booster.

still clunking

Well I tightened everything in the rear swaybar assembly, nothing was really loose, and there is still an occasional clunk from the right rear in low speed corners. It happens most often if the transition is more abrupt. Could this be the LSD? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My LSD was noisy during the first test drive. The dealer did the diff fluid swap, with modifier and it cured it.

How can I be sure that it is the LSD? It is a 2006 but it has only 12k miles on it. I have owned the car for about six weeks.

I don't know enough to give you solid advice on that, but I can tell you that my car had diff noise with only 19k miles on it. Not sure if that helps you at all though.

You have to remove interior trims to get to the shocks. I would change to Rogue RSM to avoid removing the interior in the future.

The car is a 2006 with 11k miles on it. Do you think it needs new rear shock mounts at this point or possibly something is just loose?

OEM ones are not very sturdy. It is at least 6 years old and rubber might crack. I will change it out after removing interior trim. You will not have to do this again when you need to change rear shocks.

I had a clunk from the right rear when going over certain bumps at certain speeds at a set angle and drove me nuts.

My mechanic put it up on a hoist and with a pry bar pushed and moved all the bushings on that side and it ended up being the inside nylon bushing on one of the suspension arms - little play or hardening up and - clunk -clunk -

I found that rubber / bushings etc will degrade or harden over time regardless of mileage and then they will make noise.

Replace with OEM or new silicone bushings and - no noise.

I would check them before getting new shocks or mounts

The suspension bushings degrade over time not mileage. This is just a BMW thing. It happens to all BMW's. Also a broken spring can cause this.

May things can cause this. There is an SIB about the rear anti-roll bar mounting bolts, but I do not have it.

The SIB from BMW talks about the clunking or grinding noise from the diff: http://www.shipkiller.com/SI%20B%203...Jan%202009.pdf

This is a very good description of what I experience. This sounds like a place to start since there seem to be a few possibilities. Thanks everybody for your suggestions.
