What did they make the ///M seats out of?

What voodo magic did BMW put into these seats where after nearly 11 years of use and 73k miles, the darned things look nearly brand new. I'm serious, there's barely any wear at all on the bolsters, it's amazing.

Now if they could only make rod bearings, oil pumps, water pumps, on and on and on hold up this good, we'd be in business.

My passenger seat is almost brand new. For a ten year old car, I'd say the driver seat is 9 out of 10. I'm quite pleased.

The seats last super long if you take care of how you enter the car. Don't let your your body scrape or smash the bolsters as you get in and they will last a really long time. That's probably what NickyC is doing.

^This^
If you sit down into the car there'll be little to no wear. If you're sliding in and out against the side bolster you'll eventually wear the finish off the leather.

My seats look and feel very nice for a 9 year old car.

The scuffs on then came with the car but they have held up very well.

I am tall so I adhere to the classic roadster entrance, lower my can in first and then pivot to swing my legs in.

My seats are in great shape also, I generally grab my A pillar when getting in so im not sliding in like a fat kid, I kind of swing over the seat and then drop in lol.

I use my left hand and place my weight on the opened door sill and intentionally miss the side bolster; the same when exiting; just turned 60K and the psgr seat is 10/10 and the dr seat is 9/10.

Just purchased a 2008 Z4 3.0i Roadster with 30k miles, and the seats are literally 10/10. My girlfriend bought a 14 Optima Hybrid EX fully loaded with 35k miles, and the seats where already starting to crease. I give props to BMW for the quality seats.

The seats were made by Lear Corporation in a factory near Spartanburg. They are pretty damn incredible in all respects, one of my favorite features of the car. And the leather they used does seem to hold up incredibly well. I'm a big dude who wears jeans most of the time and still, virtually no wear in 8 years of use.

Lear's video doesn't call out BMW, but take a look at the auto manufacturers that use this company....

I dont know if Lear made the seats but I do know that Lear is an OEM for other parts in the Z4 (which have labels with their name on it)

These things definitely have a very high SAE FR(*) Quotient.

* Yes, its well known that the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) uses statistical analysis, assessment of materials used and material survivor curves to determine the expected long term service life of car seats, particularly resistance to wear from exposure to randomly generated organic emissions of methane, otherwise known as the "Fart Resistance" (FR) Quotient, measured on a scale from 0 to 100% .

They're made from the pockets of the pocket fox.
An animal that only existed for three weeks in the 16th century.

I use my right hand on the steering wheel to hoist myself in/out, thus missing the bolster.
Seats are 9/10 after nearly 13 years in the Sun and 186k miles.
Some credit goes to liberal application of Gliptone.

Yes - the Ultimate Factories episode on the Z4 features a segment on the Lear factory near Spartanburg that made the seats. I recall one of the factory staff commenting that it would be neat to think that his products could end up in cars driving on the Autobahn. I used to have the DVD but I loaned it to a friend of mine after he bought a Z4 - time to see if he still has it!
