I doubt guns are at the top of most thieves list of items to steal. They are easy enough to obtain legally and illegally. Not counting kids stealing them from parents gun cabinet. Stealing enough assault rifles and ammo to launch a mass shooting might require more effort than its worth smuggling all of that out of someone's home.
Well you're right in that the trend is showing a decrease but still, I don't ever want to be "that guy".

"Yandura reported that on Aug. 12, a day before the council meeting, an AR-15-style rifle was reported stolen from the backseat of a person's pickup truck while it was parked in the driveway of a house on Becket Drive.

The victim, who lives in Alabama, had parked his vehicle at the house on Aug. 7 before he headed to Maryland for a vacation, according to police.

When he returned Aug. 12, he noticed the $400 rifle, kept in a military case, was gone. The victim told police his car was unlocked the entire time he was gone, according to a police report."

"This year alone, dozens of guns from unlocked cars have been reported stolen in Brookhaven, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Buckhead, according to spokespersons from each department. But data shows the numbers of weapons stolen from cars are on a downward trend."

Yeah don't leave valuables in an unlocked car readily visible to onlookers.

You might want to check your state laws, most only protect your right to defend yourself. Personally, I would de-ass that area and call the cops.

I'm aware of the law. I'd likely choose to do what's right and worry about my own ass later.

I have to agree with MPower. You don't draw your gun unless you are plan to use it. You don't use it unless you (or a family member possibly depending on state) is in a life threatening situation.

I would get out and try to deescalate the situation likely, but I am not going to jump out intending to use or even show a gun.

Even if someone was hitting MY car, with me in it, the last thing I am going to do is involve my gun.

Drive away, call 911, it is insured property. Getting a lawyer for a couple hours is more then my deductible.

I gotta say, when I read about guns stolen from unlocked cars, I'm assuming they were sold on the black market by the original owner. On the other hand, when I lived in Cleveland the LEOs that I knew were adamant that you never advertise that you have guns because they are such a hot item for thieves (they called those 'protected by S&W' type signs 'rob-me's').

Sad that people think about self defense?

A lot of gun people will use the fire extinguisher analogy, and I think its fitting.

Getting a carry permit (where required), is an extension of a hobby, and in CA, having a permit allows me to be less concerned about the letter of the law when transporting firearms to and from the range, or to and from my cabin (the locked container stuff).

I have also found that handing a cop your carry permit almost immediately puts them at ease, in this state, if you have that piece of paper they can be pretty certain you are no threat to them.

A hand gun is way easier to carry than a narwhal tusk or whatever your cops used to stop the bridge stabber.

Why bother carrying, then, if you're just going to sit there and get your ass kicked? Are you carrying your gun as a loaner, in case the bad guy forgets to bring one?

I'm going home. There was never any doubt about that. And so is the person whose life was being threatened. That's the good part - it's not an either-or.

I don't if you have actually drawn a weapon on someone but you don't want to. I have recently been in a situation requiring this and thankfully I didn't have to take someones life. Police exist for the exact example you presented, let them handle it, trust me.

The police get there after it's all over and interview whoever is left. I will be among them.

We appreciate your smug sanctimony, and we hope you stay safe despite the fact that knife crimes and robberies in your country are rising rapidly and there isn't a damned thing you can (or will) do about it.

at what point in our fictional scenario did I get my ass kicked?

If someone with a bat is showing signs of mental illness (hitting a car), and I can simply drive away from the area that is 100% what I am going to do.

Obviously, if the situation changes, and I am unable to escape the situation, and the guy is coming through the window...he’s going to have a red dot on his chest.

The last thing I ever want to do is have to use a gun on a person, for many reasons, mostly I just want to go home and not visit the courts.

Why would someone leave a firearm in an unattended vehicle is beyond me and the scary part is a lot of these vehicles are left unlocked.

I believe a firearm should never be left unattended unless its in your safe in your home. However, I would make an exception for lockable reinforced storage like metal strongbox that is bolted into the floor underneath the back seat of a truck.

Maybe because I live in Canada, I "don't get it" but if the firearm is not on your person there is no reason it should be anywhere else other than in a safe.
