AFE Cold Air Intake
Has anyone installed an AFE Magnum Force cold air intake? How has it effected your car's performance, is it worth the cost?
Thanks GaryB |

They change the sound- that's it. No performance gains here.

I had it for a while. The sounds it made was well worth the cost to me. Couldn’t tell any gains, but also didn’t notice any losses.

I got one last year. It's not worth what anyone is charging for it. The thing really should be a $250 item.
Butt dyno says it adds 0 horsepower, and most likely 1 horsepower is probably generous. If you want to give your car a "voice" which is what I wanted, it will do that and not leave you disappointed. It makes a very nice noise. Get it for the sound it makes under load, and you will giggle after the install. Just don't forget to remove the foam from the sound tube if you pull the trigger on one, that makes a difference. |

Thanks for the responses, I'm still on the fence with this one but maybe I will order it today for the sound.
I have already removed both foam diffusers from the tube and like the sound at the top end. |

I have K&N with Stromung exhaust. Mostly I hear exhaust at low rpm...so not sure if intake is really improvement...but it's a LOT cheaper than the intakes most people on here discuss. Not sure if it adds horses either.

Really? No extra HP? According to the manufacturer web site, it adds 18HP more.
I am looking to add a cold air intake to my Z4 but the AFE is expensive. I was wondering if I can just remove the airbox and add just the filter attached to the stock intake track. https://afepower.com/afe-power-51-11...-intake-system

A used one popped up on here after I purchased mine from Vivid Racing, which I would have bought immediately and saved some cash. If it's not something you want right now you could wait to see if one comes up for sale again here. |

Right on cue an AFe intake was just listed for sale today.
Although you didn't state which engine you have, the one for sale is for an S54 engine E85 M Roadster or E86 M Coupe. |

I've had the aFe Magnum FORCE Stage 1 Pro 5R CAI on my Z4 M Roadster for a few years now. The only reason I bought it was for the sound and the fact that through some combination of discounts, including the discount that aFe was offering when they were at Bimmerfest a few years ago, I only paid around $200 for it.
I didn't do a before/after dyno run to test it, but regardless of what aFe claims, I would be highly suspect that it adds any benefit other than sound. It's certainly not worth the $538.13 (odd price, don'tcha think?) that aFe shows as the "regular" price, and it's not even worth the $430.50 "sale price" that aFe offers. Buy it if you want it and can afford it but don't expect to get anything other than some nice, but relatively inexpensive parts for your hard-earned money. (On their website aFe offers a monthly payment plan. If you have to resort to this to buy it, you can't afford it, and you shouldn't buy it.)

Hello Team:
Thanks for the input. If it really does not add any power, no use to spend that amount of money just for the sound. I will like a louder sound coming from the engine but not at that prize. Thinking about removing the stock airbox and install one of the generic K&N cone filters, cheaper alternative just for the sound. K&N claims it will add power. https://www.knfilters.com/search/pro...d=5659525&rw=1 Thank you very much.

On its own, the CAI won't make an appreciable difference. But combined with other mods like throttle body, engine-mapping, free-flow exhaust, and limited-slip differential, the combination is a game-changer. Add suspension and tire mods and you won't recognize the car. It has so much potential, but the parts source is everything. Dinan is the gold standard, the only after-market supplier outside of Germany's Alpine that's fully sanctioned by BMW. Dinan is not first-to-market with mod kits like bogus suppliers who magically offer performance upgrades on newly introduced models. Dinan won't offer anything until it's totally tested, vetted, and guaranteed to work as promised.

K&N ALWAYS claims that their filters "add power" for any of the myriads of various fitments that they make for hundreds of cars. I doubt that they've dyno tested most of them.

Anyone have a picture of the silicone sleeve area the AFE on thier non-M Z4 3.0si? I installed mine but it was a bit of a stretch to get that sleeve to the engine itself. Pictures or any tips would be helpful!

I like mine. It was on the car when I got it. I've heard other people's cars with stock intake and mine seems a little louder. Seem to get a decent amount of intake noise.

I ended up getting it seated better. Drove it for the first time with it on and am quite happy with it. While I haven't driven the car since last fall, it feels quick and the sounds definitely puts a smile on my face. Going to be a great summer!

Why does this discussion remind me of the scene from Get Smart, where Ziegfried observes his underling, Stakker, walking around pretending to ride a motorcycle while making engine revving noises and tells him:
"Zees ees KAOS. Ve don't VROOM VROOM here!" In that spirit, Zees ees ZPost. Ve don't VROOM VROOM here!

Magnum Force? At least it has a good name.
My favorite aftermarket intake story, dates back to about 1980 - an old pal had some Mopar sled with a 340 that was his pride & joy. He stuck some wild chrome air cleaner on it, that had an inverted cover that allowed air to enter from the entire top area. We used to do this with stock air cleaner covers, it was known as a "Tijuana Hirise". Anyways his pop walks into the garage, takes a look at this fancy air cleaner, removes the Marlboro from his lip and proclaims "a smart fly could find its way in through that thing", turns and walks back into the house. A wise man Mr. Thacker was.
