Watch out for your Z4's!!!

Hi

A sad day... Today I was coming back from Med School, driving about 50MPH down the street when I saw a huge bump like imperfection down the street that was at least 10 inches high =O Slammed on the brakes and tried to get around it slowly at 1-2MPH. That's when I heard that horrible sound on the passenger side halfway through the car :/ I almost cried because I knew it can't be good. When I got home I noticed on the side skirt a huge rip like someone was pushing the plastic on the rough asphalt. It's all the way down the bottom but you can see it if you look closely.

I will try attaching pictures tomorrow but do u guys think there's other way to fix it than just replacing the entire skirt.

Something like that has happened to me also. If you take it to a good bodyshop, they wont replace the whole thing, they'll probably sand it down and apply an apoxy to it, then repaint it. It would look like new again, but yeah....i had to get my entire front bumper replaced because of a pothole LOL (bumper cracked in half)

I had a similar thing happen to my car as well, luckily the only damage was on a plastic piece behind the front bumper (under the radiator). More cosmetic than anything and not something anyone will see. Hopefully your damage isn't bad.

Is this also a problem over high center railroad tracks? My favorite backroad route home has a couple of those to deal with.

High raised RR tracks are more of a problem with the front bumper scraping. I had my incident driving through pothole hell, and hit a pothole next to a raised man hole cover going about 5 mph. I was trapped (car on either side) and had no where to go!

The key to drive through RR tracks is to take it very slow, preferably in first gear.

how is that possible, i hope your talking when nobody else is on the road, cause in 45+ mph traffic you can't slow down to less than 10 mph ish.

I just don't really care about people behind me. Besides, it's always good to slow down before the railroad tracks just in case. I really want to see someone from Chicago driving their Z's through RR tracks through downtown Downers Grove at 30MPH and not leaving their exhaust from headers down on the street.

I also drive an F-350 4WD pickup. When I bought the '03 Z4, the difference in clearance was a shock. I could drive over most cars in the F350, but there is a need for a good deal more preplan driving the Z4.

My nephew owned the car before me, and gave me a heads up to the dangers. He pointed out damage to the front bumper trim (I am replacing that after I finish installing new FLCAs). It was meant to be driven on autobahn type roadways. I guess we just can't be too careful.

Can't wait to get mine back on the road!
