Functional hood vents
So i was looking at this thread on the m3 forum http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=556687 and it caught my attention. I think these are a good option for people that want the benefit of a vented hood like the varis but don't want to spend thousands for it. With enough interest he can make them for the z4m. Let me know your opinion.

My thoughts for these vents is to mount two inside the crease and two outside. Long narrow type. Maybe 4" x 10". I would also prefer to put them on the underside of the hood if I can do a clean job of cutting the holes. I think it would look good if I could flip them upside down so the long side of the slates are pointing up. |

Honest opinion? Those vents are not good. I've seen in person and its too flimsy. In high speed the vents are shaking.
But don't worry. Trackspec autosport is already making one for us.....i just picked up my hood after a month there. Should be in production in January. Unfortunately he asked me to not share the project yet, but it will be something simile to this. He measures the location of the vents to reduce the most air inside. I had to measure my whole front for him to know the best place for them.

Never been a fan of vents although I've owned several cars that had them.
On many cars they do little for temperature, so it is only an appearance mod, in which case they are usually installed too far back because people think they look better that way, but are ironically in the high pressure are in front ot the windshield, often resulting in air flow going the wrong way, into the engine by rather than out. They can also cause maintenance issues when the drip water onto engine bits resulting in water marking of engine bits and occasional shorting out of high tension bits. I've owned Jensen Interceptors that had louvered hoods and those with unlouvered versions and both seemed to cool about the same. |

I just installed and tested at the track.
I can ask the owner to give a good discount for zpost members if we have enough interest. It was good to see that temp wasnt going over 190F although it wasnt 100 degrees out there. Will have the real real test in summer when I was getting really high temps. |

that does look fantastic, how about some pics of the underside??
and some better detail shots with a decent camera if poss. tis hood is a very rare item, its very expensive and very light weight as is..... to cut it... the item must be PERFECt. i THINK the best solution is the carbon VRS unit and store the stocker away..... However this does look ACE.

Here is also some testing that he did at willow springs. He said he tried in varios different cars, and all cars showed similar data. As you can see, the vents for the z4m sits more towards the middle of the hood, because of where the radiator is positioned. The vents sits perfectly after the radiator. There were some friends with e46 who had the vents too, and everybody said that the z4m looked the best so i was happy to hear that haha |

I effected the same sort of result on a race car I own by raising the back of the bonnet, but that only works if you aren't running a full windshield - try spacing up the rear of the BMW coupe bonnet and I think you'd find that air flows in from the high pressure area at the base of the windshield. Whether that would do any good depends on whether there are other exits for the ir that comes in, but either way, I can't see it as being better than the vents further forward. I don't know what the rules of the tracks you guys run at might be, but one possible solution without butchering a nice and rare alloy bonnet, would be a fibreglass replica bonnet with vents cast in. On a pure stripped down track car or in hot regions where cooling is real concern, yeah, I get that its a great functional improvement.
Purely for Looks..... definitely not IMO

Yea not a fan of how it looks and I would probably lose the center vent unless it was a straight track car and maybe not even then. It would be nice if they were integrated under the hood and were painted the body color to match so they didn't stick out so much. To me the Z4M isnt really a car that should have hood vents it just doesn't look good or at least I haven't seen somebody do it right yet. For function I guess you cant argue.

I for one love the functionality of it, and I don't mind the look either. Form and function and this ticks both boxes in my book. Yeah if you've got a garage queen and your worried about the resale value, then sure, but then you won't be making any mods. Good on you Alex. Maybe next season I'll try this myself. and I have seen it done right, I just don't have the 220k yen required to invest in a hood atm.

Too bad no one makes a fibreglass hood for these cars - then you could stick it on in summer, no matter how fugly it looks. Could probably speed up the process by drilling guide holes for each hood and avoid all the time alignment sometimes takes.

You can always find a regular hood from a Z4 from a junk yard to cut into. The vent cutout will offset the weight of the regular hood
