BBQ retrofit advice

It’s 16 degrees here this morning so I’m planning my spring projects.

I have been cleaning and repainting the wall behind my BBQ after each season. I guess searing the rib eyes is taking its tool. It is not the the biggest deal but I’m ready for a longer term fix.

My ideas are install a larger Peice of granite which is easier to clean than paint. I usually ruin the paint cleaning it anyway. Or install an outdoor hood.

I have an awning above so running it straight up is not an option. My garage is behind it so I guess I could go along the inside wall and out the side.

Anyone else have a good idea based on that they have seen or done ?

In this particular arrangement having a large stone piece would probably work the best. The grill would ideally not be this close to the wall.

I'd do tile of some kind. Cleaning the stone may be more work than repainting the wall every year.

There are lots of photos on Google image. Just type BBQ backsplash.

Another idea it to wrap that wall in PPF!


By the way, your deck looks amazing. That's ipe, correct? Amazing stuff.

The deck is actually Mahogany and it’s a ton of work each year. It last for about 4 months but looses its color fast sadly.

We pressure wash it and stain it with BM Arborcoat stain.

Hey honey, I invited 20 guy off the internet over for a bbq. Stock the beer fridge and put some wine in the ice buckets ! I’ll get the steaks and lobster tails !

Steak and lobster???!!! I haven’t even owned a BMW in years, but I’ll get an M badge off ebay and stick it on the Mustang if that gets me in!

I agree with everyone else. Just needs some kind of back splash. Slab of the counter top material would work fine I think.

I'm honestly surprised you don't have a bunch of heat damage to the side of the house. I would move it but in lieu of that maybe remove the siding behind it, throw in something fire rated behind a stone or brick backdrop.

Stand it off the wall a bit and flash it at the top and cut some weep holes? Make it temporary for use only when you grill? How about tempered glass, standing off as well? Paint the wall black? (JK) Would much rather clean non-porous material than a porous material, so just spitballing here...

1. Remodel and move the grill away from the building and out from underneath the awning.

2. Install an impervious surface behind the grill. Stone and tile have been mentioned. How about a large sheet of stainless steel that is wider and taller than the grill? Think commercial kitchen backsplash. Stainless is the easiest to clean of the materials mentioned, and can be made to look nice. Talk with a "high end" or commercial kitchen installer and I'm sure you can come up with some ideas. The basic area will be flat stainless, with some nice edging - could be wood, tile or stone.

Countertop material is very heavy and thick and I just worry about it staying adhered to the wall.

I am thinking some type Of tile with Epoxy grout. That should be an easy decrease and rinse.

Mustang gets you in for sure. No M badge necessary.

I don’t have a badge either, just an M Sport lol.

Remodel of the outside is not in the cards right now. It’s a big job now that the deck is down and the gas lines are run. . About to embark on a serious project of finishing the basement and the budget is blown on that before it starts thanks to escalating materials and labor costs. Probably the worst time in my life to do a minor construction project. The M5C I always wanted will be in the basement plus. At least it will increase the RE value I hope and some day someone will sell the house and get some of the money out. Boy- it a good thing I love my wife !

I’d probably just leave it as is and paint it once in a while. I have the same issue on a wall behind my grill but it is stucco / concrete block and I don’t care much about it, at least until the house is painted again.

If you do put something there, I like the stainless steel idea. Second choice would be extending that backsplash / counter material up behind it. Probably need to think about insulation for both water and heat (don’t need something making the garage wall even hotter by conducting heat). Also need to make sure there is space to open the grill cover with anything you put over the garage wall. Hard to tell from picture but seems like it could be a tight space.

It’s a hot grill. And we use it often and full blast to sear steaks. The heat is not an issue for the house. The smoke is.

I’m going to see if they make a shallow stack stone like the base is made of. Hopefully that works for me (functionally)and the wife (ascetically).
