I don’t understand the auto starts on cars these days. I have always read that idling to warm the car is actually bad for the engine. I just let the rpms drop after start and drive off but go easy at first.

I always warm up my car don’t care about wasting gas, otherwise I’d be driving a different car. I can’t believe that letting a car idle is bad for the engine when it’s one step up from the least amount of stress you can induce on it. Sitting in traffic must be hell on my car if that’s the case

I warm my car up gently ... but getting in, pushing start, putting it in D and pulling out. I think if you're driving at barely above idle speeds it's probably not much different than letting it sit and idle. Great time saver so I don't have to speed on the highways. (Yes, if you let your car idle, you automatically need to make that time up on the road and you are totally unsafe! /trolling)

I broke my rule this morning and let it warm for a bit. I got to the highway and my temp gauge was barely at 160. Damn it's cold.

If it hadn't snowed, right now I would do it for a minute then drive slowly, but only because it's -20C outside.
If it has snowed I'll start it and have it run while I'm clearing the snow. I only wish it didn't have a clutch lockout switch. |

I've always done what someone else mentioned and started the car, did the seat belt, turn on the radio, and then go, going easy on it until it warms up a little. I was taught that the sooner the engine goes above idle speed when it is cold, the quicker the oil gets to the places where it has settled from while sitting. Everyone has their own beliefs, but I have a 4Runner with 250,000 miles and I have never had to add oil between changes, and have other cars with similar results, so I must be doing something right.

Mee too, usually, when the car is really cold, I just wait it to low automatically the rpm, then I drive away (about 30/40 seconds). Then when it's barely warm (maybe the engine is still warm, I start and drive quiet for a couple of miles, then let the party begins :-D

Related topic: After 55 years driving in CA and FL, I sometimes struggle with the first (manual) shift in cold weather. Shifting "normally," I grind first to second quite often -- maybe 10 times so far this winter, my first in a snowy climate. Gear oil is obviously thick as molassas in Saskatoon. If I shift slowly, deliberately, no problem. Old habits die hard. I'm hoping my gearbox doesn't die early.

I live on a hill, so I just start the car and idle down the hill in second gear. By the time I get to the interstate the auto climate control is blowing hot so I feel comfortable pushing the go button. Average daily temp this winter is 28F

I sure do when it's -20c outside.
One thing I find very weird is when it's like -15c or colder the car doesn't "cold start" it idles at 1k for like 2 seconds then idles down to the usual. |

But we just hit our firsts -20c of the year and my first winter with this car and my tranny started doing a new noise. It literally has a metal cracking when shifting and goes away after 5 mins of driving. I aswell hope our transmissions don't die early. I replaced the fluid with OE spec maybe I should have listened to the threads and get the Redline D6 ATF stuff... IDK. I think I'll just let it go and see how it goes. Here's the noise |
