Rick, if you do nothing else to your Z4, at least do this: ZHP Shift Knob - 6 Speed BMW part number 25117896886, it is well worth the investment and it is such a simple upgrade. It is difficult to describe the difference, but very noticeable.

Not an issue for non-///M.

Thanks for the comments. I'll look into the shift knob.

Late to the party, I bought a 2.5i last year and I think if you can stretch to a 3.0i I would recommend that as it has a few additional standard features.

I would also make sure your roof motor works as they are costly to fix!

I gotta ask (not flaming) what is the noticeable difference? I swapped my shift knob out with a Momo Anatomic short, which is a nice upgrade. I like the Momo's because the attach to the lever via set screws, which makes for a tight fit vs. BMW "snap-in" system.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

If I could put it into words, I would. I am not sure I can explain it other than it feels so much better. It is shorter and it just fits. The original one is tall and light weight and I thought it was fine until I used the new one and well the old one just doesn't do it for me anymore.

I think I know what you mean. The Momo gives the same effect.

My advice is to find a way to buy a Z4m (roadster or coupe). Yes they are more money, but they are nowhere near the same experience as a 3.0 and 2.5. The m versions could potentially raise in value. The m's are the ones that rival Porsche's seriously for experience. Spend the extra few dollars and buy a car that could be a "forever car". I can't imagine where I am going to go from here. It's so good.

I'm going to agree with the other comments, and say that my ZHP shifter made a world of difference too. It was much smoother (weighted knob) and more direct (shorter knob). It's such a cheap part and available at the dealer for a great price. I wouldn't consider any other shift know. I love mine.
