This idea has been kicked around for a while in Canada, always some left leaning municipal politician. Of course, then it get's pointed out that Canada gets this thing called "winter", and that electricity is really expensive here vs natural gas. I recall a few years ago that the government wanted 10% of all cars to be EV by now, Toronto Hydro came out and said that 10% EV's would cause severe brown outs etc. Can you imagine the cost to convert all households to electric heat, and cooking. I can imagine the madness......my wife loses her mind when they talk about this, we bought a 36" Wolf gas range a few years ago, try to take it from her and you'll be in for a bigger fight than if you try to take our guns.

in an ironic twist, this would create a huge demand increase for electricity. In order to efficiently meet this demand, coal plants would need to up capacity to meet it.

no other electrical generation, except for nuclear, would be able to sustain this level of increase without spending billions in the process. Solar, wind, hydro are all too inefficient to practilly support it.

By this same logic, I wonder what the leakages from hydrogen-fueled vehicles will do to the environment if that technology ever takes off?????

Wow - triggered much?

First, the article said that they are studying proposals, not enacting them (edit: Two cities in California banned NG in new buildings).

Second, what is so terrible about looking for alternatives for finite, non-renewable resources? Oil, gas, and coal aren't going to last forever. Some studies estimate that the proved reserves of natural gas will last 50-90 years.

Do you really think that the best plan is to continue allowing billions in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, and ignore the problem in the hopes that it will just fix itself?

Best option is just to make believe we can solve our problems with building wind and solar farms and of course ban the sources of energy that actually work.. That is like trying to be a pro bodybuilder and planning to grow muscle by only drinking protein shakes. Wind and solar can supplement the grid, they can never be the backbone. And btw I been working in utilities for almost 13 years.

And if you actually read the article...

"Berkeley, California, in July became the first U.S. city to pass an ordinance banning gas systems in new buildings". That is an enactment right there.

We ran out of all fossil fuels in the year 2000. I know this because they said this in the late 70s when I was still in grade school.

All these estimates are junk science.

Should we be more efficient and explore new ways, yes. Should we enact policy based on BS like these morons are proposing. Absolutely not.

So your answer really is to continue allowing billions in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, and ignore the problem in the hopes that it will just fix itself? As I stated previously, those fossil fuel "sources of energy that actually work" don't have that much working time left before they are just a distant memory.

Also, I think you are giving American ingenuity an extremely short shrift. The fact that wind and solar won't currently power the grid, doesn't mean that they can't eventually be developed to a point where they will power the grid. There is a huge business opportunity here for bold capitalists and rugged individualists - for the man who refuses to blindly follow the fossil fuel herd like the rest of the talking point sheeple.

If enacted, this has all the built in misconceptions of obamacare, along with the unintended consequences:

New commercial buildings go up with no natural gas, creating more need for electricity, and it will be non-renewable energy.
Consumers will be less likely to want new housing........so the old, leaky infrastructure remains. Even by a few percentage points, the difference could be significant.
New builds (either commercial or residential) seemingly could be made more "leakproof". Leakproofing older infrastructure seems cost prohibitive, judging by the state of how we keep up other infrastructure (roads, electric grid, etc).

Bad idea.

Sounds like you went to a bad grade school.

Can you show me the junk science in the current estimates?
