What about the spare
I would like to get rid of my run flat tires like so many of you have, but what are you all doing about a spare? Are you comfortable going any distance without one? Are you all just packing some sealer and a compressor?

About 6 months ago I spent a little over an hour on the side of the freeway at night with traffic whizzing by at 80 mph.
I had to pull into the ditch, because people (morons) kept flying by with 2 wheels on the shoulder. Tow truck finally showed up and towed me home. I plan to switch to RFTs so it doesn't happen again. Can we get more info in the spare and jack in your trunk that fits over the brakes on an ///M? I'd like to believe that's an alternative to the performance hit I'll take with the RFTs, but I can't picture it.

I just made the switch myself. I have a tire repair kit in the trunk. it's basically some sealant and a compressor.

Just the input I was looking for. Where I work we have a fleet of different vehicles and the new chevy Malibu has a hole in the trunk for spare but just has a compressor and sealer, NO spare. That malibu has over 60000 miles on it and never had flat tire. I have never had flat tire in my life and I am 51 now. You know the moment I DONT have a spare I will be made a fool.

I did some research on this and the best way to go was to make your own spare from parts off of tirerack.com
the price of the official spare kit is pretty substantial. The tire sealant adds a false sense of hope IMO since if a leak is so small that it can be repaired with tire sealant. then it's also small enough that you can probably drive to a safe location and re inflate until you can repair it. I think the biggest concern is having a tire badly damaged and have no spare in sight. Having a spare is a 100% guarantee that if your tire is damaged in any way you can always swap it and go.

I noticed the z4 bolt pattern is 5-122mm. I have looked for small steel wheel to make a spare but this size seems to be unavailable. I only saw the size I need in custom wheels, which I don't want for spare. If I can come up with something I will share with everyone.

I keep a conti comfort kit and puncture kit in the trunk, and I now have a BMW spare and jack in the garage, if I take a long trip I put the spare in the trunk too.
The time I hit a huge pot hole and put a hole in the sidewall I drove 3-5 miles to the next exit and bought a new tire at Les Schwab.

Just checked a couple of Google hits, and they say:
"Will fit E46 M3 (Non-competition)." Pretty sure that's a no-go for the Z4 ///M.

I bought a BMW compact spare a few years ago. Make sure to get the 125/80/17 size. Later bought an E46 crank jack and stuck it underneath. It does take up a significant amount of the limited trunk space in the Z4, but it has saved my ass at least once (when I had a tread separation on the freeway - no fun, but had the spare on and was moving again in 10 minutes).

Flat repair kit, don't drive on 19's, and get new tires before they are due. That's my advice. 19's are far more likey to leave you on the side of the road.
Or buy a spare tire as shown above. |
