Unable to accelerate, stall. Off everything, restart, crank but does not fire up

Anyone encounter the E89 suddenly stalling and glided to a stop while driving as usual? Removed the key fob, inserted back and tried to restart the engine, but it merely cranked and not able to fire up. Did couple of times to no avail, so called for BMW towing. Electrical-driven parts still work as usual (USB music, power windows etc).

No error code, no symbol came on. Did the "check control", it says "OK"! Battery should be 4 years 9mths as of now. 91K km on odo.

What are the likely reason? Please advise. Dealer has not yet called me back, so would like early info for now.

My Volvo DD did that a few months back, it was the computer. I hope that's not what's going on with you. It did it a few times before it completely packed it in. Loss of power, stalling and then it came back, finally died as I was pulling off the highway.

I would make sure the fuels fresh. Bad/stale fuel causes issues like this...

Also, the e89 guys might be able to give you more help cause this is the older e85 section

Crank shaft sensor gone bad would be my guess or the fuel pump.

Hi all,

I was initially informed that "a part of the engine" needs to be replaced but a week later. i was told that an entire new engine will be ordered to replace the current one.

So yeah, i have just collected the car with the new engine. I am a happy bird. 91K km but with a totally new engine, not refurbished. Replaced under warranty.

I did not bother to ask what went wrong in the first place.

What does this have to do with the E85/E86 Z4? The sDrive23i engine isn't offered on any of our cars.

Nothing, but it was an interesting story.
So now we know that the sDrive23i engine is prone to becoming a grenade.
