I agree with your wife. Dirtbiking is an amazing experience for kids. It will help them learn to be responsible with an engine, and if he does decide to streetbike later he'll be much safer with it.

I am an insurance risk actuary... what are you trying to say?

I would say get it for 2 reasons. If the kid wants a crotch rocket he will get one sooner or later. My rents never let me have one, first thing I bought was a crotch rocket that I had no place on, cause they didn't start me out right (and I REALLLY wanted one!). Luckily I am still here and drop free.

I've been riding since I was 11 or 12. Started out on a little bike and then it was like a sickness I had to get something bigger and better. At the moment I've got 1 track bike (CBR600RR) and 2 dirt bikes (WR250f and a DRZ-125L), I recently sold my street bike (ducati 1098).

I love riding but it is dangerous and at some point he will fall off.

I would definitely do it. To me I would expose them to something like this early. Giving them choice in life ahead... kart racing, dirt bikes, small motorcycle... you name it. Who knows. He might be the next dirt bike superstar

What you do is buy TWO!!!. One for the kids and one for you so you can ride together!!! I have rode with my kids all summer long and now I can tell if they are ready to race! I send them to a motocross boot camp near by. We have a nationally ranked pro who has the setup and wow!!!

Getting the curiosity of 2 wheels out of him while he is still "under supervision" would be better for him. IF you don't get him the bike, by the time he is old enough to be able to buy a bike and ride it without telling you, I will almost guarantee you it will be a street bike, and that shit is dangerous as fuck. How do I know? Story of my life, went down twice on a street bike, once down a cliff on big bear mountain.

LOL. I fell out of my seat on this one.. He is a little young but responsibility comes with a good guardian. 50cc's really wouldn't hurt a soul unless if he was riding off a cliff. Teach him some responsibility. Kids will fall but as long as he gets back up. good luck

I had access to one at 15 and we also owned a ranch in which i discovered biking. It was extremely liberating and i took to it immediately, just liked the feeling of the air and mobility a lot.

Ended catastrophically when i took too much liberty and got myself addicted to reaching even higher speed. I fell down at what felt like a million MPH and had so many injuries that i thought it was over (upon further inspection later, i was lucky to miss an enormous boulder only a few feet away).

Struggled all the way back to the house (nobody with me) and swore never to be on anything with two wheels again. Still have marks from that accident about four years later.

I did start a campaign telling any of my friends that would listen to not go near a bike, one of my closest didn't pay any heed and had an accident in a city. Guy was lucky to be alive, had a large number of broken bones, now walks around with metal in his legs and missed school for a year. It was heartbreaking just to be next to him.

Hence the start him when he is young and under supervision... so he doesn't make an idiotic mistake like you and your friend did.

You have to know (and feel) the consequenses of going down to realize what your limits are. Much better to go down slightly fast under supervision then really fast all alone, I am sure you'd agree.

We are talking mini bike not a full blown race bike in an all out race setting. You can get airlifted from walking on the street.

A helmet/eye protection, gloves and some decent boots and he will be fine.
