If you took the car sounding like that to a dealer and they told you it was the normal S54 Vanos rattle then they are full of scheiss - definitely take it somewhere else. I hope it turns out to be minor and you can get back to enjoying the car.
Troubling - this problem, the vanos cam screw and a couple of rear main seal leaks. |

Could be the audio quality, but it has some sort of an exhaust, low frequency sound. Not sure if it's VANOS, I haven't heard that active at idle speed. They need to get it fixed regardless.

you'd be giving up your vanos issues for bearing issues though The low tech ls3 motor sounds pretty tempting

Have you tried to get warranty service at an independent BMW shop? Sometimes that will work if they find a problem and call BMW NA.

Sounds like the emissions control pump that plugs in on top of the heat shield and connects to a hose on the passenger fender well. When I had mine off to check headers for leaks this it what it sounded like. Look for a hole in the hose or a gasket leak around part #08 valve. The valve is held on to the cylinder head by two 10 mm nuts that might be loose right above a notch in the heat shield.

why would you even talk about the P Boxter, they're not really Porsches.
If I was to get a sports car, I'd get the mid to top line for that brand. BMW M, definitely a ZM or a M3. Porsche, at least a C2, not some rich lady boxter... nor the cayman. Doesn't matter if the Boxter can beat the Z4M or vice versa, it's a Boxter, never would even look at one on the road haha, in fact I'd look away. And a Z4M, modded nicely, that's heaven Sorry to offened Boxter or Cayman owners out there... but they are fugly cars hahah... which part is the front and rear? I have a Cayenne S, and I just tell people I have an SUV.... |

It gives an impression like, you wanna own a porsche but you can't afford one... like I said, unless you're a rich lady walking out of those types of cars... then it's ok...

Even if the dealership still can't find anything wrong, and if you truly want to keep the Z4M, I would at least take it to an independent shop to see what they can find. Just because it's a BMW dealership does not mean they always know what the hell they're doing.
Most dealerships have only a few qualify techs on hand. The rest are just helpers, and code reader. Anyway GL. p.s. If you're going to trade it in for a P-car, at least go with the Cayman S. There is something gay about a Boxster.
