Inspection 1 mileage

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of what mileage Inspection 1 is usually performed at? I know it varies by how much/hard you drive the car but I figure there has to be some sort of common range.

My car has just over 26K miles and the service indicator says oil service in 7K miles. I just got the car and I am not sure if inspection 1 has been performed yet so I wanted to know what mileage its typically done at to know if there is a possibility the car has already seen it. I will get try to get a service history report next time I go to the dealer but just looking for some general knowledge on here. Thanks!

As a general rule of thumb Oil Service will come up about every 13,000 to 15,000 odometer miles and Inspection I will come due at between 25,000 and 30,000 miles. The Service Interval Display counts down from 15,500 miles. Looks like someone reset your Service Interval Display prior to the mileage going negative. It's not uncommon for inexperienced technicians to reset the SID at a mid-interval oil change.

That's what happened to mine, so the Inspection 1 came up at around 18k, and my SID is running at about the same rate as the OP's.

So are you saying that if a tech re-set the SID too early then potentially the inspection 1 timing could have gotten lost as well?

The service sequence is Oil Service, Inspection I, Oil Service, Inspection II, and then repeats this sequence.
The Service Maintenance Checklist calls out those items to be performed at each service. You can find your Checklist here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=130986
For example if you did an oil change at 7000 miles on the odo and reset the SID the next service would indicate Inspection in 15,500 miles or around 20,000 to 22,000 miles on the odo.
The SID resets to 15,500 miles and then varies the count down based on gas mileage as a way of determining wear and tear on the car.
Your dealer should be able to get your SID back into the proper sequence.
Also make sure they don't overfill your crankcase; it calls for 5.5 liters of TWS 10W-60 (which is sold by the liter not quart). Techs often dump in all six liters. BMW SIB 11 03 03 is very specific about S54 oil capacity:

Thanks Jim! I am still a little confused though. So are you saying the SID order will always be oil service, inspection 1, oil service, inspection 2 no matter what? When you say "reset the SID" do you mean begin the approx. 15K mile countdown to the next service (whatever it may be) or start from the beginning of the cycle (oil service, inspection 1, oil service, inspection 2) again?

Basically, if a tech did reset the service indicator too soon, what affect would it have on the order/timing of the services to be performed?

Mine isn't driven too much so it's had more than 1 oil change before the first inspection was due. At these additional oil changes the computer must not have been reset (it wasn't calling for the additional oil changes) since it was still counting down to inspection 1. The car has a little over 29K on it, took it into the dealership last week and they said it still had around 1500 to go but would go ahead and perform the inspection anyways.

Thanks for the info. I guess don't need to worry about taking it in to the dealer this fall for a freebie.

Here's the 2006 (and up?) Service maintenance checklist, not sure if anything changed for 2008.
