They sell fluid labeled as automatic trans fluid and manual trans fluid. Was asking for clarification…but automatic transmission fluid (ATF) serves several purposes such cooling, lubricating, transmitting force, and acts as a hydraulic fluid with special additives to prevent foaming, rust, and wear whereas manual transmission fluid primarily lubricates gears and reduces friction.

FYI, OP was looking for AT, not MT, trans fluid.

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make? BMW offers ATF and MTF (e.g., MTF LT3, MTF LT5, etc.). ATF and MTF are sold regardless of the type of fluid.

I mean ATF is a multi-purpose "fluid" but MTF is effectively "oil": I double-checked it, BMW does not offer "engine fluid", it's "engine oil" (that "lubricates gears and reduces friction", to my knowledge). Never mind, your request for clarification was correct then , but their terminology seems misleading/inconsistent.

The car is a 2009 and I assume the transmission is ok. Thus I'd offer whatever transmission fluid BMW calls for.

There are gears in an automatic transmission. Also in both manual and automatic transmissions gear teeth have an involute shape and thus experience a rolling motion against a mating tooth.

As an aside I don't know how common it is but some manual transmissions can be designed to use (require) ATF and not the more viscous manual transmission lube.

My 1996 Mustang GT and its 5-speed manual was one such transmission.

Yes. I’m aware of their being gears in an AT. All I did was ask the OP to clarify whether it was an AT or MT, considering BMW sells both.
