Do I really need AGM Battery?
I need a new battery soon and was debating on getting the Mini Cooper (CSL) battery. Does anybody know about fitment with this on the Z4M.
The AGM battery will near $300 installed as I believe registering it with GT1 is required to maximize the life. A Indie Mechanic that is very reputbable that I have gone to in the past said, that when installing a new battery, the new battery needs to be registered with a GT1. Is this absolutely required? I am in Los Angeles and there is no cold weather issues. Thanks in advance!

My un-informed dealer stated that they don't know how to program it for a lither battery. There are several threads about batteries which work. If you can get it programmed for the battery, do it. Beedub fried his very expensive battery because the alternator overcharged it all the time. I've been running a Deka 11.5lbs battery with no issues for about 4 months now

Just spend the $180 or so to buy a proper aftermarket battery. It's really not that bad for every 4-5 years or so...
No initialization is required via GT1 computer. Just plug & play. The problem with the Mini Cooper battery from what I remember (when I was doing research on what battery to get) is that it has less cranking amps and other specs inferior in comparison to OEM. Here, I dug it up for you. This is what you can buy from your local auto parts store: http://www.zpost.com/forums/showpost...6&postcount=47 Last edited by mfanatic325; 06-25-2012 at 07:46 PM.. |

Here's the battery I installed, Deka is the manufacturer for the MUCH more expensive Braille batteries. In fact, this is just an unbranded one

I just put this in after finding that the previous owner installed the less expensive one that AutoZone lists, which is not the right size. We need H6, not H5.
Keep the vent nipple from the old battery. New one doesn't come with one. |

Description says "Duralast Platinum is an absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery ".
I'll grant you that it's a little heavy. (But I only weigh 120#, so I've got some margin.) |

i had a porsche GT3 battery and my car fried it to death :-( after a lenghly talk with eas it seems we MUST register the smaller batteries otherwise your car charges it like its the stock unit..... i have since moved back to the stock AGM battery......
that was a very expensive lesson. By the end the car wouldnt hold charge for a day, if you remember my pics i used to have the trickle charger on, on every photo!! lol

As I Understand the atlernator has to be adjusted so the output voltage is considerable less than oem. Now I don't know if this is done through an alternator shop or via computer at the dealer. This maybe be referred as registered with the car. IDK

That sucks big time! I've seen lots of other light weight battery conversions & I don't recall any of those guys mentioning registering them. strange It does make sense though.

LA and AGM are about the same weight(as you saw in the other post the AGM weighed 44#s). There really isn't any significant advantage to AGM from my research. The parts stores offer both AGM and LA versions in the same shell and the AGM is usually 30-50% more $$$. CCA Ratings are similar and warranty is identical. I bought an O'Reilly LA battery and have had no issues.

An AGM is a sealed battery and since it is IN the car with BMW's I would not think you would put in just any old FLA battery and have a high possability to make yourself sick.
