How to reset windows

This prosedure will reset the windows limits so that when you open the door the window will drop the 1/4 inch.

- Sit in the car, and put the key in position 1, so you have power to the windows.

- Push and hold down the window switch, and keep it held down for 5 seconds after the window is all the way down. This re-sets the memory, telling the motor, in effect, "Remember where we are now? "

- Roll window back up, and release switch.

- Open door. Marvel at the downward motion of the window. Repeat on other side, if needed.

Thanks imz4n, there seems to be several ways to do a reset...
When the auto up bounces & goes back down,
I raise the window then hold it in the up position for a few seconds... seems to work.

IIRC there is a more detailed proceedure in the manual;
I'll see if I can find it....

Funny how I found this thread today.

I assume this will fix my problem that has happened to me today and in the last two weeks where the window doesnt drop when opening the door, which then makes it difficult to close the door again.

could you confirm

TIA

That process should do just what you are looking for. There may be other ways to do this, as pointed out. I do not remember who posted the fix originally, however I had saved it on my PC and it did work for me.

The Official Reset Proceedure

Courtesy of a BMW tech on another forum, ...with thanks.

Initialization is performed on the power window switch of the relevant door.
Requirements for correct initialization:
• Initialization with engine running
• Convertible top, doors and windows closed

Initialization comprises:
• Erasure of initialization
• Reinitialization

An initialization must be performed:

• In the event of malfunctions, e.g. no one-touch control function, no opening or if available no comfort function is possible
• After the power window drive has been replaced
• After work is carried out on the power window mechanism
• After a power supply interruption, e.g. disconnection of the battery or disconnection of the power supply to the door
• After the door window glass has been removed and installed or replaced
• After adjustment work on the door window glass
• After adjustment work on the convertible top
• After replacement of seals

Erasure of initialization:

Check whether one-touch control (toll) function is inactive, otherwise repeat procedure.

Reinitialization:
Avoid a break between the two steps!
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer
• Open door window glass fully

Anyone have an idea if its possible to do one button up on the passenger side?

Is an aftermarket module needed?

I find it absolutely absurd how the driver side has one button up but my passenger side doesn't.

You can definitely do it. I've got it on mine. I think the stealer has to program it though.

Also have it so that whenever I lock or unlock the door, both doors do it. And both doors lock whenever I drive off.

I've asked the dealer about programming it, and my SA confirmed with two techs that it couldn't be done.

So I'm confused... Does it need an upgraded module for this?

Not sure, but wasn't that a MY05 change?

If you press or pull your passenger window button, does it have that same extra push or pull that you have on the driver's side button? You know what I mean?

I think I know what you mean, that click for manual up and one button up, right? Like, you pull halfway to manual up or down, pulling all the way and it goes one button mode.

It has it on the driver door, but I would have to check the passenger door if it has that "click" to it.

This is long and convoluted but hopefully it will help folks to get their auto up and down functioning again.

I have an '06 on which the the battery just died. After a jump to get the car home I notice that auto up on both sides no longer works. Dealer fixes battery and cannot fix the auto up problems. Service guy tried repeatedly tries to re-initialize to no avail and tells me I have to come back in a week because there must be a general module fault.

So this past weekend I scour the forum for more info. Try every reset procedure posted and NONE of them work.

On a whim and starting with windows and top up, I lower the top remotely with the key. Since the top will not go back up with the key, I put it up by using the key in the door. Continuing to hold the key I wait for the windows to go up after the top is up. No dice - windows do not go up.

So I try lowering the top with the key in the door and then and raising it with the key in the door. Voila! the passenger window goes up this time but not the drivers window.

Now I get in the car, turn the ignition on and confirm that the passenger window now works. It does. The driver's window still does not work. This is when I notice something strange - the manual up position on the drivers side does NOTHING. The window only goes up in manual mode in the AUTO UP position!

Then I notice that moving the passenger switch up to manual up generates an almost inadible click and the driver's side does not do this. For reasons unknown I manually raise the drivers window to the mid position and stop. Then I just sit there like an idiot gently pulling the switch up to the MANUAL up position. At first nothing happens. I keep gently doing this and then I start hearing clicks. After a few clicks, the window starts moving up in manual in the manual position. I run the window up and down manually several times, holding the switch in position at top and bottom. Now the window will repeatedly move up in the manual position. So I try auto up. Voila! Auto up now works on drivers side and on passenger side.

I have no earthly idea why this worked and I had tried so many different things that I am not sure if I have correctly written the sequence down.

The bottom line is that, if you fiddle long enough, you can get everthing working again. Still working two days later.

Maybe someone else can follow up a little on this and determine the definitive way to get auto up on both windows working again.

I hope this helps everybody.

Hate to bring back from the dead an old thread, but I need help with my windows.
My car was at the body shop for several weeks and the battery was allowed to drain a little bit. I know this because when I went to pick up the car, it took quite a few more cranks than usual to fully fire up the engine, and I had to reset the clock and radio stations.
Then on my way home, I noticed that both my driver and passenger-side windows had no functioning manual-up NOR auto-up features.
Herein begins my desperate and failed tries @ resetting the windows

At one point, I got the passenger-side window to work again, but the driver side still didn't work, so I kept fiddling around with it some more, and now they're both broke yet again
Anyone have any other suggestions besides the resets? Because those don't seem to be working for me

p.s. just to clarify: my auto-down and manual-down works for both windows, but I need the auto-up and manual-up to work again. Also, I've tried putting the key into the door and locking the car to force the windows shut, but they won't go up. I haven't tried forcing windows down, but I'm willing to bet it'll work.
Any help is appreciated...TIA!

I ended up taking the car to the stealershit. They charged me $63.88 for what probably only took them a whopping 5 minutes to fix on their computer or whatever
Oh well. I'll just invoice my insurance company

Window not fully operational

Hi All,

New owner of used 2005 Z4 2.5i
Only had it couple of weeks and the passenger window if really hard to open & close.

Now it has stuck half way.

Tried the reset options but dont help

Will be taking back to garage to get them to look at fault.
Had to get new alarm sensor (under bonnet) after that failed 2 days in on ownership

Driver side works perfectly....

That's not an issue you can solve with a reset.
I think you'll have to pull the door panel and see what's up.

Here's a thread on how to remove the door panel.
