convertable top not going up or down

good afternoon. my 2004 z4 convertible top stopped going up or down, either by key turning in the door, or with the below dash buttons. i see a red light when i try to lower it i don't think i saw when it was working. the FOB buttons have never worked but i could raise and lower it by turning the key in the door lock but the top or the windows don't come down of up any longer. it worked great the day before and then poof.

any ideas? fuse? hopefully not the top motor.

Is it blinking red? Like nothing moves just flashes red?

when i press the "open roof" button, the red light comes on as long as i am pressing
the roof open button, but not blinking

and sorry, to add more context, it would appear there are 2 lights that could come on by the down button. the one that is coming on is the bottom of the 2 and it is more of an orange colour. it stays on while my finger is pushing on the button

Go into the trunk and ensure the trunk shelf is fully down. Ensure the knobs are turned properly…

There is also a micro switch on the forward bulkhead that the shelf engages. That can also be the issue. It can be bypassed to check operability. Also that microswitch has a “silver lever” that can fall off etc. This what the shelf engages….

Since the roof is not starting to release, the problem is either the micro switch as mentioned by another poster or the windows need to be reset. Either issue will prevent the roof from starting. When windows need to be reset in a Z4 they will not drop that little bit when you begin dropping the top, which totally stops the top from operating.

If it's not the trunk shelf/knobs/micro switch, try resetting the windows. Google windows restting for a BMW Z4, E85.
