Making a spare key????

So I only have one key

Is it better to just buy a key from the dealer

Or

Just get one off eBay and have it programmed using my scanner or however?

I think the dealer is the best option as they can be tricky to get right.

The battery can go bad in them......but I don't think that happens a lot.

My OEM key battery failed in 2016....the keyless functions began to fail (my Red Roadster is MY 2007). I replaced at the stealership and they re-programmed the remote roof open, windows, etc.

Unless you just need a new key - I added the SmartTop controller since my car was ONE MONTH too old to get that function - I actually like the SmartTop better. You can put the windows up/down, top up/down with the key - start the top up and pull the key and walk off and it finishes. Also don't have to be dead stop to drop raise the top. One of the best mods I installed.

Key is about $250.
I bought one a few years back because I was losing sleep wondering what the heck I would do if my only key failed.
eBay blanks and what-not all looked pretty sketchy, so I bit the bullet.
