Newbie 2006 Z4MR owner
Hello all,
I'm planning to finalize the purchase of a 2006 Z4MR (13K mi, 1 owner, garage queen it appears) in west Texas this Friday pending outcome of the PPI) I haven't test-driven the car yet or inspected it in person (i live near Kansas City) but after reading thru many of the posts here (very, very informative so far!) seems that fluid changes and tires should be the first order of business. The carfax is clean w/ oil changes every 2 years. Curious if anyone has thoughts on other important items to consider w/ the car beyond what the PPI might reveal. Thanks in advance and looking forward to my first Z4M driving experiences! |

Wow, a great low mileage Z4MR. Congrats (probably). :-)
With that low mileage, other than fluids, there really isn't a lot to worry about. If you get two keys, I'd make sure both work since it was driven very infrequently. You probably already know about the quirks of the S54 engine and Z4M if you've been reading, but clunks as you shift in 1st/2nd are usually normal and can be eliminated as you get more familiar with the car. Shifting 1st to 2nd is notchy. Replacing the fluid and going with a heavier shift knob really does make a difference here. Ticking/tappety noises from the motor are usually normal (it is not a quiet engine), but knocks and rattles are not. If you don't have your foot on the clutch when you turn off the engine, you'll hear clattering. That's normal. You definitely want to check the top to make sure it goes up and down with no issues. There are two knobs in the trunk that can be turned to raise or lower a shelf for more storage. If that shelf is up, the top won't retract. My situation was probably very rare, but I'd recommend checking for water leaks. Move the seat all the way forward and as high as it will go. You'll see the carpet is split behind the seat. Reach under there and push your arm as far forward as it will go. See if you feel any wet foam on the carpet backing. It's a very resilient foam/carpet and it doesn't cause problems to get it wet, as long as it isn't staying wet. I found a bizarre leak under my windshield cowl where the firewall material had separated from the body and caused water to migrate inside. It was hard to find, easy to fix. To be on the safe side, I'd examine the rubber on the clutch and brake pedal. It should have minimal wear. The tires are probably original ContiSport and should have almost no wear. The week (I think) and year the tires were made are stamped on the side like 13 06. I'd also look for a dot in the odometer display. These are just "keeping 'em honest" checks. But if you have valid service records, the mileage is probably accurate. I'd look under the front at the fangs. See if there is any damage there from bottoming out the front. Man-o-man is it easy to do. It's easy to touch them up and have them repainted if they need it. Also, stop 3 feet before you think you should when pulling into parking places with cement stops, etc. Everyone here knows what I'm talking about. The nose is long and low on this car. I hope it all checks out. It sounds like a great find. And the friendly and helpful folks here on this forum and knowledge of this car are second to none. You can't ask for a better community of enthusiasts. We all love our Z4M's whether they are the rare coupes or the superior roadster. ;-) Salty

New Guy
For the past seven years I drove a Z4 3.0, but as of Friday, I will pick up a 2008 Z4MR. I live in Atlanta. I have read many of the posts and expect the forum to be both enjoyable and educational. Thanks for having me.

I thought I would post a picture of my old ride. 2005 3.0 Automatic. The best car I have ever owned and that includes two Porsches that I loved!

Re Re New Guy
Hello Salty,
It is Imola Red with black interior. It doesn't have any mods on it as of yet. It has been a hanger queen apparently, only 18500 miles. I will add some mods eventually, but first I'm going to drive it a little, a little over 2000 miles back to Atlanta. Its in Phoenix. Assuming that is, that the car is in the condition I have been told to expect when I see it up close! My contact at BMW did some checking and says it is a good one. Pictures are nice, but hands on the steering wheel are the final yes or no. Regards, Ken |

Hey guys- Just wanted to introduce myself.
I just picked up a 2003 3.0 with the Dinan package about 2 weeks ago. It's got just over 80k on the odometer, and seems to be running really well. I have admired the Z4's since they were first introduced, but have always been a Porsche guy myself (I have a fully restored 914 that is keeping the Z company in my garage). So far, I am very impressed by the car. It is nimble and feels planted, even when you push it into corners. Anyway, I'm glad to be a part of the community now. Here is the obligatory car photo... -Eric |

It seems California makes it complicated for the buyer of a car with a lien. The title is electronic so there is nothing to sign over for 4-6 weeks The auto shippers all want a release of lien but the bank wont issue one as it is redundant to the electronic file....... So I will be calling California DMV tomorrow to try and get a straight answer. |
