I wish I would have seen this post a couple years ago... I dealt with the on again & off again ticking for a long time and nobody at BMW seemed to be able to fix it. They'd replace a belt here and there, but it always came back.

spend some time at 3K rpm and see if it goes away, if it does perhaps just needs lifters.
