Manhattan Classic Car Club just got a Z4... so I guess it's a collectible now!
Their driving experience echos what Hammond felt

1. Limitation production numbers (both Coupe and Roadster) 2. Last of the M's with Hydraulic Steering and a Naturally aspirated Engine 3. Only Z4 with a real M-Engine 4. Actually feels like a proper sports car 5. Subjective, but potentially Bangle's best design (EDIT: Not Bangle) They Z4 M is in my opinion one of the last true M cars and at its current price-point is great value for the price Now if you're in it to make some money and perhaps flip it, it really depends. Z4 M definitely hit the floor on the depreciation curve and higher prices are only justified by certified low mileage samples. I know that some people buy used ones, fix them and sell them for a small profit. Making some money on it is definitely doable but don't expect to buy a 150,000 mile model, do no maintenance on it and hope to sell it for triple in 5 years. Offtopic a bit: I got the Z4MC out today, not easy for those of us living in the land of salted winter roads. We've had a warm spell and a good rain last night, so out it came. Wow do I miss it. Wow did I see a bunch of other stuff that had come out just for the day! Hot rods, motorcycles, other sports cars. It was a good drive. |

- True but it's kinda part of the same family/time line - - It's still a special car, I'll give you that but you're always going to itch for the M version, at least that's been my experience with next to best non-M car (e.g. M240i / M2) - Huh, you're right, go figure. |

Its time in the spotlight is coming, with enthusiast automotive media identifying it often as a hidden or bargain gem.
Frankly it's no stranger to BMW cultists, but I am not sure it'll ever strike collectors to drive a meteoric rise in price. Those looking to turn a profit flipping the car struggle in today's market, especially given the cost of refreshing the S54 and bushings, etc. |

E9x was the next generation 3 series. Our lovely zeds were alongside the E46 3 series. Electric steering yes, but having owned both at the same time I will never, ever, have a bad word to say about the 3.0si. Well maybe one — no LSD! The N52 in the nose of the E85/6 made for a very different animal, delightful in its own way. |

As far as I remember they also didn't sell well (financial crisis?) and you could still get a brand new one in 2009 For a few years you could have a brand new Z4 M or a E92 M3, so mentally I do consider them to be from the same family E46 screams early 00's, Z4 M has a timeless design, 9/10 people actually think my Z4 is from this year |

Although the E46 M3 shares our engine I consider the E9X M3 more closely to our cars timeline. The last raw M cars.
And I agree the 3.0si is also a great platform in its own right.. (Minus the LSD) but the low production combined with the S54 is what will make the Z4M shine down the road. I wouldn't get hung up on the mileage either. Drive the car the way it was meant to be driven and maintenance the crap out of it! (Exterior, interior and mechanically with receipts!) A high mileage car that looks mint and was well maintained is still a gem. Happy driving!

I always find it odd that the classified section here commonly has an M coupe or two for sale but rarely an M roadie.
And as time goes on we may see a bit of a sleeper effect with the SI. Perhaps people generally may consider them to be so disposable that in ten years they will be rare. Not that I care that much; I have my car to enjoy it! |

I've run two 3.0Si Coupes for over 5 years, but just bought a Z4M Coupe last month.
Here in the UK I'd say the 3.0Si is 80% of the car for 50% of the money, but that extra 20% is just so special! No run-flats, hydraulic PAS and an LSD - it's all about the details. And the S54 engine of course! |

The bottom had kind of fallen out of the roadster market by the late 2000s, along with the financial crisis in 2007-2008, and the E85 Z4 was at the end of it's 7 year cycle in 2008. Honda discontinued the S2000 in 2009 after sales slid to less than 1,000 cars, down from a peak of ~9700 in both 2001 and 2002. (Little known fact: Honda announced in 1999 that it would only sell the S2000 for three years and 5,000 units, but they obviously dropped that plan, much to my dismay. I had #313. My 2006 Z4 M Roadster is far more rare.) BMW introduced the E89 Z4 in 2009 but it was pretty much DOA, selling less its best first two years than the E85 except for 2008, and fell off sharply after that. The convertible hard top made it much heavier and many people felt it lost its "sports car" feel, becoming more of a grand tourer. It still had a 7 year production cycle, but production had dropped 80% to around 5,000 units when it was discontinued. The E46 may scream early 00s to you, but the coupes and convertibles were built into 2006. The E46 M3 shared the S54 engine with the Z4 M and the nav and many of the controls were the same. I equate the E46 with the E85 Z4 and the E89 Z4 with the E9x, as each generation shared similar bits, including Nav. The E9x had iDrive, not available in the E85 Z4 but in the E89 Z4. There were no bits from the E9x that are found in the Z4 AFAIK. My wife's previous car was am E92 2011 335is Coupe. I bought my 2006 Z4 M Roadster used in 2012 and the two cars definitely felt a generation apart.

Oh, and the manual trans shift knob.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Our 335is Coupe had the N54 engine and our Z4 M Roadster has the S54 engine, so I didn't realize that. The Roadster has a lighted knob and the 335is didn't so I didn't realize that either.

It's interesting to read opinions on this topic from 12 years ago.
I spend a lot of time tracking BMW values, part of my hobby is to "chase" what I believe are special examples in the hopes they'll be collectible (appreciate). The plus is I get to drive and enjoy all of them, (something I can't do with the money in my IRA). The definition of a high dollar collectible car is always going to be limited production, OEM condition, low miles, and no negative history. Rarer spec builds are also a criteria but usually one that makes an already collectible example more valuable. Most models see a steep drop in value initially, like any other car, then it will level off. Average cars will stay at that level while the special cars will start to increase in value. We're seeing this now with the Z4M Coupe. The Z4M Roadster still has a flat line value. You can look to the Z3Ms for trends; obviously the Coupes are sought after, while the Roadster has only seen appreciation in the very nice examples. I enjoy all the viewpoints on here, we have one hell of a fun hobby!

This is incredible info - some of it was common knowledge, but much of it was insight into the incredible design, manufacturing and construction of the beloved E85-86 M.
This makes me even more aware and in love with my beloved Red Roadster.
