Just as an FYI all, I installed my splitter without the center support rods. I just relied on good bracing from the front rods as well as the internal rods I fabbed out of ready rod. (care of HD of course).
I am about 500 miles of driving so far without issues.

I wasn't even planning on jacking the car up, not to mention removing the wheels. I think i should be able to take the bumper off and throw it back on without doing any of that stuff.
Mr Roger didn't lift the car or remove the wheels in his DIY. http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79994 |

I think it really depends on what kinda install you want to do. It is very possible to take the front bumper off the car with out jacking it up but you are going to have to have a long arm to reach the bolts at the rear of the under tray. For the amount of time it takes to jack the car up it makes the job way easier. The wheels don't have to come off but I really believe jacking the car up make the job a ton easier. I mean really it only takes 5 minutes to jack the front of the car up anyways. I can say that I don't believe the splitter needs the front of rear struts. Both my brother and I had our cars at New Jersey Motorsports Park last weekend for two days and the splitter held up perfect. We were redlining 4th gear at 8200rpm and splitter was solid as a rock. In addition we both have the larger splitter then that was offered in the group buy so we making even more downforce then the standard version. I can say that the splitter makes a large difference in the grip available at the front end. I had to play with the suspenson settings to re balance the car. Pre splitter I had the car set very aggressively to try and make up for the lack in front end grip. Now I was able to dial that back and make the car a bit easier to drive on the limit. Over all the splitter was a great buy. Here is a couple crappy blackberry pics from the hotel parking lot near the track....

Did you pull some camber out, what did you end up running with? Also curious how the car felt with all the extra front end down force. Did the rear feel a little skittish? Would you consider adding some rear aero to gain some down force there?

As far as the front being skittish in comparision to the rear I didn't think it was too bad at all. The rear had the same grip it always had its just the front had more then before. I have always felt the front to be lacking in grip anayways.; If anything it just made the front end have to work less hard. I like my car set up with a tad of oversteer. I feel it helps me on corner exit and sometimes depending on the corner with entry. Understeer scares me wayyy more then oversteer. As far as rear aero goes that will be happening next year for sure. Seats gotta come first. I just gotta find an extra trunk lid because I don't wanna run the wing full time. Also that will allow me to run some sort of plastic glass in the rear lid to drop more weight. More rear down force would help me in the high speed stuff. The thing the car needs now is way stiffer springs. I am currently running 525lbs front and 650lbs rear and though some of the really fast constant radius corners the rear is tucking so much that the tire is rubbing. I am going to be going either 600lbs front and 750lbs rear or I may just throw caution to the wind and go 650lbs front and 800lbs rear.

With this being attached to a plastic bumper up front, how well does it really improve the downforce, or is it primarily for looks? The plastic bumper cover gives and flexes before it really puts any downpull on the front end.

The bumper is VERY sturdy! The only flex I have is in the splitter it self. If the bumper is flexing because of weight (air flow) on it that same weight is still on the front end regardless if it is flexing or not. Flex in it self does does not decrease downforce but rather the way in which the part flexs.Take a look at the current generation Ferrari or RedBull front wings on there 2010/2011 F1 cars. At high speeds the wings flex downwards to increase down force which gives these cars a massive advantage over the rest of the pack in highspeed turns. I was driving next to my brother on the way home from the track last weekend and the splitter was pointing it self downward a tiny bit at speed (80mph+) but that would only serve to increase the shovel effect hence increasing downforce. Now conversely a couple years ago in F1 there was the flexing rear wings where teams were engineering flex into the rear wing so it would tilt backwards at high speed. Hence leveling out the upper plane and decreasing downforeace at speed to increase speed

Spacers for splitter
I haven't installed my front spoiler yet but here's what I plan for the 3 spacers and washers--Rap them in Carbon Fiber trim which will match the spoiler and will not chip as paint will- In Canada you can get it at Canadian Tire or most auto supply stores.

Splitter install variation - rear support
I finally found some time to get the splitter installed.
I know most of you have these on already, but here is what I did with mine. Instead of the turnbuckles for rear support, I wanted to get the support into the center more so that I could control the front angle better. Step 1 Aluminum angle trapeze hangar, dropped from the upper supports using 1/4 - 20 SS threaded rod. The drop length puts the trapeze in the gap below the rad. Step 2 Plastic notched for threaded rod down to splitter. Step 3 Aluminum flat bar (1/8) for under support of splitter to get a more even lift. Step 4 Center carrier added to trapeze for addition strength in the middle. (this was 1st gen, when I had planned to cut the plastic under tray) Step 4 This is the 2 gen of the trapeze using rod couplers. note: I spaced the couplers down from the trapeze to use minimal threads in the top of the couplers. (see mark on right coupler) That way I had more thread from the bottom for height adjustment. This allowed me to keep the under tray in one piece by drilling two holes & bolting the support up from the bottom. All buttoned up. For the back corner support I used a small piece of angle (drilled and bolted) on that plastic drop piece.

Fangs fill piece
For the front, I decided to build in a bit more support and avoid the use of the turnbuckles.
For the fang fill piece I used 9mm Lexan. Since I had lots of scrap, I built up some blocks(x3) to support the front. (green arrow) Since they are much larger (spread the load) they provide all the support necessary. You will also see a block (blue arrow) next to the fang. There is one on each side. These are the depth spacers for the Lexan strip (fang fill) Next is the Lexan fill piece. It is wrapped in 3M flat black. The orange strip is 3M body shop grade double sided tape (top and bottom). The Lexan is flexed (bowed) into place, tape pealed off & the front support bolts tightened. and.... a few finished pics.

Great Job Ian! I picked up the fender washers for mine - out of stock on the aluminum - will look tomorrow! Should have added the custom trim job DIY you did for the perfect fitment!

Fantastic job Ian. Best looking one so far and seems like it will be ultra functional too.
I was sure about no bars, wasn't sure about how extra bracing might fall out and didn't expect the fill piece at all. Nice. |
