Of course it doesn't, those cars had hydraulic steering. BMW fails at electric steering regardless of which one you drive today.

What happened to all the reports of the G42 still being the purists choice with a manual and RWD. |

Well, the Z4 20i can be had with a 6MT, so maybe the 220i will as well at some point, who knows; but nobody promised a 6MT M240i, ever, I think. RWD M240i though is very much on the table according to those reviews, just not from the start. |

For those who like manual transmissions it cannot be overstated - the G80 M3 (ending 2025), G82 M4 (ending 2027), and G87 M2 (ending 2029) are the very last. |

That's the M340's weak spot, everything else is brilliant in the car. I have had it almost 2 years now and even Lexus manages to offer better steering feel. What they can't figure it out boggles the mind. I heard the new G8X cars are better in this regard as least compared to its predecessor but still not as great as some of it's competitors ala Alfa/Caddy etc.

Car and driver has been on BMW about this for years, with only small improvements.

Shame they can't add two more doors, especially since the car is longer now. It would be nice to have the practicality combined with the driving dynamics.

Accuracy and feedback Customers on the whole want accurate steering, customers on the whole DO NOT want feedback. The small shoebox of enthusiasts non-withstanding. I think the best example was C+D did a preprod test drive of the G20 330 and the engineer along for the ride explained that too much feedback made the preferred driving style (one hand on top of the wheel) noticeably more difficult to manage. While its true feedback is harder to engineer with electric, if it made a difference to overall customer NPS and sales BMW would find a way to engineer it back in. They do not care because their customers do not care. (Again, other than the small shoebox of enthusiasts) |

Yup but we'll continue to hear about the good ol' E46 and E90 days. It's been a decade and a half, time to let go accept this is the new BMW steering.

Or hold what you got...
Unfortunately, I'm one of those diehards that is hanging on to my E92 coupe. It's over 100K miles and has seen better days, but I still enjoy driving it. I've got the money in the bank to buy a new car, but it's hard to find anything that motivates me to jump.
I've driven just about all the modern lineup as loaners. The 3 series has a great engine, suspension that puts mine to shame, and even a great stereo! But absolutely 0 road feel through the steering. As stated above, BMW has decided that their customers don't want it. You would think with all the option to make adjustments, steering feel could be one of them. So for me, fingers crossed the new 2 doesn't come out looking too cross-eyed or angular, it's the final model that would get my dollars. Or I can hold on until the used market drops back down to reality. |
