In either case, hoping the CPI solution is a fix and worrying about smog (other than visual) will be a worry of the past

The OBD2 smog-legal cats CPI uses have passed on every E46 M3 that's gone through emissions. From a pricing point, $769 is too low for the SG to use the same cats IMHO. The cats alone are almost $500, plus there are laser-cut flanges, piping, bending, welding materials, labor, shipping, and R&D costs which must be made up... So, I'm optimistic in that I don't think they are the same cats and will pass smog.

Yes! We test fit the prototype cats on my Z4M a couple weeks ago. Since then we've made some adjustments, and they should be sent out to California for smog testing shortly.
The cats use a higher concentration of precious metals, and they run the full length of the attachment. Space is tight. Above the stock heat shield is the driveshaft, so there's not room to bend the heat shield upwards for the O2 sensors. CPI has been creative with the positioning of the O2 sensors. It has required some labor on their part to get everything to fit, including capping the pre-drilled hole for the O2 bung, drilling a new one further downstream, and rewelding it at a different angle. Here's a picture of the prototype prior to the most recent adjustments. This is a prototype built to test function; the production model will be cleaner.

The cats are now in-hand over here in Cali! They will be installed on a Z4M running Gruppe-M intake, CPI Headers, and either OE or Rogue Diablo exhaust with OEM tune (SES is currently lit due to aftertmarket headers). Once installed, the car will have a standard CA smog sniffer test performed and recorded, so we can show exactly how low the CO2, O2, HC (PPM), and CO actually measure with these cats installed. I took a look at these and the honey-comb inside looks sufficient, if these don't keep the CEL off and keep the car legitimately clean, I don't know what will!

I got shipped off overseas and had to leave the project. With DKF not producing any more s-pipes, I think the interest has passed.
