pretty sure the OP is installing a supercharger, not a turbocharger
also, superchargers are "blowers" because they blow more air into the engine, turbochargers suck it out

Both superchargers AND turbos are referred to as "blowers," because they force air into the intake manifold (hence "forced induction"). More air + more fuel + proper tuning = more power. Neither of them suck anything.. Superchargers run off of the engine's crank (belt-driven), while turbochargers run off of the engine's exhaust gases (flow-driven). NO AFAIK ASA blowers run a standard gear set, that's rotrex that has a sort of planetary variable gear. That quick spinup woosh thing is when the pulley clutch starts to grab and starts spinning the blower.

AFAIK, they have to be specified with the "clutch system" as an optional extra, looking at the gpower site the clutch is a payable option. Always was a fan of the ESS CFR range, i really thought that was a solid kit tbh......

All superchargers have internal step ups, they all spin at 100,000 + RPMs you would need a crank pulley bigger then the car and a tiny blower pulley to achieve those speed without an internal step up gearset. Your vortech blower is designed with a much lower impeller speed, where as the ASA is a much higher. It's different theories of design, large impeller low speeds or small impellar high speeds. Each has their benefit and downside on providing better torque or HP, efficiency or fuel economy.

Did someone mention that Asa doesn't supply devices for BMW anymore? Why is that the case? I recall that in the early 2000s their kits were very popular with the e46 crowd. What happened?

@O-cha: If the ASA blower has internal gearsets to achieve 100K RPMs, doesn't this mean that the ESS Vortech is more reliable in the long run? |

Each has advantages and dissadvantages, i like that my blower can make 750hp plus but i pay for that low down in the rev range... Either wsy each option is sick and will give you mad power :-)
