No it does not and that is due strictly to Apple and Apple's decision not to make this tech available on the iPhone for public use yet. Nothing to do with BMW.

The same technology works with the iPhone and Tesla model 3. So, it should be able to work on the iPhone?

No, Tesla does not use NFC which is restricted by Apple. Tesla uses Bluetooth. BMW could have used Bluetooth too but they chose NFC which is currently not possible for us iPhone users.

The NFC spec provides for remote wireless power of the NFC chip. It almost certain this will work with a phone with a dead battery in a similar fashion the card key does.
I am still trying to figure out when apple and bmw will make this work . Apple has the technology inside the iPhone it uses for the applepay . Since I suppose a lot of BMW drivers own an iPhone, I am wondering why and above all when will they make the digital key work. Any insiders????? |

So let me get this straight:
- This Digital Key feature works via NFC only. - Because it's NFC-based, it does not work on Apple devices. - Because it's NFC-based, it only works on Android (what about Blackberry?) devices. - BMW infotainment continues to favor Apple devices at the significant expense of Android devices. So basically you need two phones using two completely divergent OSs to take full advantage of a BMW's electronic doodads. Wha-whaaaa? #FAIL

There are a lot of requirements to making this digital key work.
It will only work with some Android phones. If you have verizon wireless as a carrier, it wont work at all. In order to share keys, at first, both you and the person you would like to share with have to be in that car together to send a digital key. |

BMW isn't protecting owner privacy; it's protecting its own, at the expense of potential owner satisfaction. BMW has a long history of this. Oh, and other brands are protecting owner's privacy. For instance, the brand I now drive (Porsche) rejected Google integration via Android Auto for precisely the reasons you state. Here's an article on The Verge about it from 2015. Furthermore, Porsche does not install conventional Event Data Recorders in its cars, primarily to protect owners rights regarding operation. So I repeat: Wha-whaaaa?

So I guess iDrive 6 cannot be upgrade to iDrive 7 to use the Digital Key. That is frustrating, I have a 2018 M2 (less than a year old) and I cannot take advantage of this. Sad part is, I would bet it could work, but BMW just doesn't permit that to occur.

It may require some additional Bluetooth hardware to allow remote start. But it is true that they should allow upgrading if possible. I like the new I drive but not much has changed really from what I have except entering an address and launching navigation has fewer steps than before.

been waiting ages for this function. I've always wanted to carry just my phone for everything. Slowly getting there in the last few years.
After 10 years of iOS I now use a note 8 as my daily driver and I actually find the integration with idrive so much better. I can read and send sms using just the voice control button on the steering wheel. NB I did have to do some coding so that I can use whilst driving. I can leave my wallet at home as the majority of my debit/credit cards work with the note 8. My phone can open my front door lock. So the last piece of the puzzle is having my phone as a car key. It's so handy to just grab only your phone as you head out. |

It's not about privacy - there was in interview in Roundel with someone in BMW who was in charge of the infotainment - he stated that the company felt Android was not a premium experience therefore would be be a focus for integration. Which is an asinine statement to refer to Apple IOS as premium.

Or is that only in Canada. Speaking as a retailer, we accept Apple Pay & Google Pay, both transactions require the iPhone or Android phone to have NFC enabled. And no, pinpads don't support BT for obvious security reasons. So NFC for iPhones only works on Canada then?

If this will finally provide remote-start functionality, then I'm interested. Otherwise, I'm not really sure what else this provides other than leaving the key at home and hoping to god that my iPhone doesn't break during a trip....

Good luck, hope it works better than the Mercedes Me app, which is awful...check out the ratings. A key fob is much easier, especially for remote start. It does look like BMW will still provide a traditional key.
It also is quite ironic this will only work with Android, yet Android Auto isn't available in BMWs. And wait until BMW starts charging an annual fee for this new feature, like CarPlay.
