i mean it basically started as a truck engine. its a large square engine built for low end torque and redlined at 5-6k depending on generation.
it is effective though. i test drove a 5th gen and it was great. definitely doesn't sound like a typical supercar with 8k+ redline though.

+1 on the relaxing and stressful. It makes you feel alive and that you are trying to control a beast. It feels so fulfilling when you actually are one with the beast and controlling it. No other car, ESPECIALLY Porsche, has this feeling. Porsche is too refined, too easy IMO. |

I'm surprised no mention of early-mid 60's Corvette. Great looking car, parts are easy, easy to work on, pure driving experience and there is something great looking about them. V8 sound.

It's gonna be hard to beat the 997 GT3 in this debate. You can get it with room to spare with a $150k budget, too.
Trust me, it's an event to drive. Unless by 'event' you mean 'gets tons of attention'. If you need that go for an older exotic (although there's not much in manual and under $150k besides a F355 and the Astons) or a Viper. |

Gen V Viper or a Mustang GT350. I like other but I honestly would keep the change for track day fees and tires and gas.

GT3 or GT3 RS Nothing else would even get a look from me if I had to have it be manual and 150k. They are driven properly over here (not collector mileage only) so there are plenty of 997 GT3 RS for sale that fit the budget. |

If it is a car that will sit in the garage only for that short 2-3 hour drive, a Porsche is always the right answer in this budget, but also the obvious answer, if its going to be special then i would want something you won't see another the few times you do take it out
Ferrari 430 or 599 Something with an Ultima badge Lamborghini Diablo, ideally a 6.0 but we all know those wont exist below 150k Odd choices, TVR Sagaris, Noble M15

During the depths of the pandemic last year, there was both a 997 GT2 and a 997.2 GT3 RS for sale in Canada for <$120k USD. At the time, I was just finishing off paying my grad school debt and couldn't swing it. I still feel sick about the .2RS - the same car is probably worth $200k or more now. Would never, ever, ever sell that car.
Either of those 2 would definitely be on the list. |
