Great information!
So happy to find this post and thank you for the detailed roadmap to finding the code. I just bought a 2006 M Roadster and there was no original paperwork so this thread was invaluable in establishing my phone's bluetooth connection.

Is this a Bluetooth code for pairing phone, audio, or both?

As far as I know, it’s just for your mobile phone. I don’t think streaming audio is part of the equation.

Crazy as it sounds, I don't think that every car came with Bluetooth capability. I know - a BMW that was originally around $50K - no Bluetooth? but yeah it may be the case.
If you have the VIN for the car, you can find an online VIN decoder to see if the car has a "mobile phone prep", which I think is Bluetooth. Or - if you press the talking head button on the left steering wheel spoke - and if your car does in fact have Bluetooth, you should hear the car reply "Function not currently possible" or similar. My car has Bluetooth and this happens if I try to use the phone but my phone's Bluetooth is turned off (which I blame on my kid while he was mucking around with my phone) or if I left my phone in the house. https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...x=2&ajaxhist=0

^ Correct. BT wasn't standard. The other thing to remember is the media renaissance that occurred while our cars were around. BT for cellular calls was a thing but car integration was not as widespread in the auto industry, let alone standard.
Mp3's (& mp3 discs) were the defacto mainstream choice for digital music while BT media streaming was fledgling. I think it was several years after the E85/86 run ended that BT streaming was picked up steam and starting to integrate into cars.

Did you try searching the forum? Hint: the information you seek is in an appropriate sub-forum. If I tell you where it is, it will disincentivize you from searching in the future when you need an answer. I actually found it by Googling the question and the result pointed back to this forum. Another hint: It's not as straightforward as pairing your phone to a newer car, so be patient. I've been through this a few times, each time my wife and I get new phones.

Just a tip for anyone who has had to go through the procedures above to find their PK. When I got my last new phone in February, I printed out a label with the PK on my Brother label maker and stuck it on the lower inside edge of the console door. Another good place would be on the inside edge of the glove box. I was lucky to have all of the original manuals for the car when I bought it used, including the card with the Bluetooth PK, but this beats looking for where I stowed the manual in the home office.

Fantastic advice. I just bought a 2008 Z4 (68k miles) as my wife's X-mas gift.... no info on Bluetooth other that it did have the option but code was lost or not known. Using this info and method was a quick 10 minutes to peer into that small hole with a flashlight and read the label with the PK code. Thanks....jc

BMW Z4 (2006) - Cannot find Bluetooth PK
For the life of me, I have followed all the instructions and cannot find the Bluetooth passkey.
I cannot see anything through the subwoofer slot and have removed the boot carpet and the same nothing. I know I have BT because I can get to the pairing screen where it asks for the PK. Any other help will be greatly appreciated. Last edited by ONEMCKENZIE; 08-05-2022 at 06:26 AM.. |

The method of looking through the speaker opening behind the driver seat will work well for some, but if you are unfortunate enough, the label may not be visible unless you have a fiber optic bore scope or similar. That was my case, and I wasted a lot of time.
Then I remembered I had an old BMW Scanner 1.4.xx and XP laptop - a legacy from the 2005 325xi which I once owned. It works for the E85/E86 platform too. It's not a full featured coding app, but it allowed me to call up the BT module and find the Pass Key. Over the Winter I plan to get a little deeper into coding and diagnostics, but for now BMW Scanner 1.4 allows me to read and reset quite a few error codes and change some parameters.

Thank you for this post. I took it to the dealer for normal maintenance and asked if they can locate the code. They sent me a quote of $350 in addition to maintenance costs. Crazy. They charge you for anything! I saw a YouTube video but this is much more clear. Thanks again.

PK Code
On my 2008 Z4 3.0si - after many contortions and several strengths of "reader" glasses, various tools, etc., I was able to read the first three of the required four PK numbers. For the fourth digit, I simply used "trial and error" until it paired on the seventh try.
Does anyone know if the bluetooth PK connection will also handle my Apple iPhone music apps (iTunes and Pandora) connection to the radio's sound system? I see that some owners buy an "Amazon bluetooth contraption" that connects to the back of the radio and handles wireless music from iPods and iPhones. This would allow the iPhone to charge via the cigarette lighter while using the phone and/or the radio. If the car's bluetooth system cannot handle iPhone apps, can two bluetooth systems phone and music) work together? Does this contraption produce decent sounding music? I currently have my iPhone music playing through a "doogle" hardwire into the radio sound system via a tiny plug under the dashboard. Should I stick with this setup? The only problem is that it does not allow the phone to charge, so is time constrained. Is there a newer BMW or bluetooth aftermarket radio that handles these issues and fits in the same space? Just asking... |
