Formula One Japan Qualifying 3. Notice that no one went faster on their last run? It's a battery thing. First high-discharge lithium-ion battery packs don't like heat and they don't like being charged without an appropriate discharge prior to the charge. So quick turnarounds are not likely to produce as much power. Now while I'm venting (pun intended) three battery units for the season is just stupid. Lithium-ion have a service life base on # cycles and charge history. In your Hybrid car (sorry if you own one of these) the cycles are deeper and generally have a resting period before charging. Repeated charge cycles will increase the IR (internal resistance) in the pack resulting on lower voltage output. Looks like Formula one is having 4 to 5 charge cycle on a track like Suzuka International. The batteries will also be further away from balance meaning that one cell may top off sooner than other cells. To the best of my knowledge there is no way to balance multi cell batteries like the 350kW/9 MJ used in Formula One as they will have a lot of cells. Note that Indy Car switched from LiPo to a supercapacitor to cure most of these issues. This issue will get worse as the season extends. For a good primer on LiPo batteries and there care think about how Apple handles the charging of iPhone batteries and their recommendations for longer life. |

In over thirty years of watching F1, this is by far the worst it’s ever been. I got through maybe 20 laps today and turned this trash off, what a joke. Glad it’s gone for a month now, won’t miss it. Apple TV sucks too, I’m on the trial period as my F1 subscription ended. I might not even pay the $100 and go do something else during the rest of the races. This crap is unwatchable.

Same thoughts I've had every race so far. Just when they had the field bunched up closer than ever (2022-2025 where we had all 20 cars for the first time ever qualifying within 1 second) they instantly have gone the other way where MB once again have a 1-2 second per lap pace advantage and there is little racing going on. So little that even a relatively inexperienced Ant (who is solid but might have been the least impressive rookie last year despite the best equipment) is literally making a very solid driver (probably the most impressive driver after Max in 2025) in Rus look downright bad. The racing itself, it outright trash now. Another reason the 2022-2025 regs got things close is because the driver actually was able to go all out and his ability meant more. Obviously, you need a good car, no one will deny that, but 2022-2025 it was probably 50/50 driver/car, and now, it is probably 10/90 driver/car. It's a shame they cater to an agenda of sustainability when F1 is anything but.
Seems Mclaren has found something with their car, and Ferrari (who have the best all around car) just cant perform as well. Today was case in point, despite the great car, Ham just isnt able to perform at a level where he is going to be able to beat 4 other drivers. He is damn lucky the Red Bull is very atrocious because it was atrocious, he would also be behind Max and Had. |

We are what three races in? I think I tuned in a couple seconds the first two race weekends. I didnt watch anything this weekend.
From what I have read and heard drivers and fans say… what a nightmare this is right now for the sport. Seeing the FIA come out with statements and whatnot on reviewing energy/battery use is pathetic. They should admit the mistake and fix this immediately before someone is killed. |

I think the new reg's attracts a whole new fanbase, those who want "a spectacle" of overtaking, no matter how artificial it is or looks. As a European I also feel it's meant to attract a lot more American fans where it's more custom to turn sportsevents in huge shows and entertainment with less consideration for the pure and actual sport and heritage of the sport. No offence intended obviously, it's just a difference in sportsculture.
I also think, FOM is trying to pressure the drivers to not speak negatively about the new rules, but some drivers just always speak their mind openly and fierce (Verstappen, Alonso), some do it a bit more nuanced and some just letting FOM censor them. For me it's clear, hearing the outspoken opinions and reading between the lines, the drivers are really having some issues with the 2026 cars and regulations and there's a lack of enjoyment driving these cars. |
