I agree about the gaps and the possibility of lifting. I also appreciate all the hard work that the OP has put into this rare piece.

Apparently everyone is waiting to install it but as soon as I get mine, I guarantee you I'll miss work if I have to just to install it lol. Beedub, haven't received mine yet, maybe next week. I've never heard of carbon fiber "settling down" with the sun, nor have I ever experienced it in my cars or even on the bike when I had it.
I can tell you one thing, if you're a perfectionist, no "professional" is gonna do a better install than what you'll do yourself. He's gonna do exactly what you're gonna do; try his best to fit it as perfectly as possible but because it's not his car, your best will probably beat his best. All they can do is align it and hope that the gaps described don't show. |

I had a very odd situation. As of yesterday USPS tracking showed delivered & signed by me. I pulled up the delivery confirmation signature they had on file and it was literally a photo of a blank line. Needless to say I worried a little that I'd be filing a shipping claim and ultimately just get my money back...
...until the USPS man came in today with the box! Just a few extra shots I snapped briefly during a test fit to add to this thread. There are more angles that really show this thing off but this is what I've got for now. Current downside is that I realized how crusty my 3rd brake light is because of this spoiler, so now I have to spend money to replace that too

It looks awesome! As if the spoiler was custom made for the car. Sometimes, I wish I waited for an IB roadster.
Would you be doing clear or red for 3rd brake light? I opted for red as it's cleaner and matches the side lights. Plus cheaper doesn't hurt. Have you consider taking off the blade spoiler on the hardtop? I might be doing that in the spring for a even cleaner/sleeker look.

It will slide around while placing, if you just use that, hard to clamp in place.
Tape will anchor better.

lol.....
Yeah, ive seen that vid before. I could comment on a couple of minor things, such as after cleaning dont touch with bare hands. But in general that method works fine. It may be a little more difficult to hinge the Z4 spoiler due to the big arc. The other method is to start the orange ribbon just enough that a tail sticks out. That lets you place the lip and then pull off the rest of the ribbon while still down & in place. .... & maybe less chance of air entrapment.

I am really considering using the "adhesive" and clamping the spoiler using nylon binder straps wrapped around the entire boot lid.
Unlike others I do see a certain amount of flex in the piece and if warmed it will be pliable enough to conform to the boot contour. The shape is there it just needs "relaxing". The spoiler will never be removed as long as I own the car so I don't mind using the glue.

are you going to use silicone along the leading edge to get a nice seal so water doesnt find its under?? ok so what if you fit in this method and the finish doesnt hold up over the years to come??? not sure the permanent method on a non o.e piece is wise.

It will be critical to put just enough on to create the seal around the perimeter and wipe away the excess. The finish is a clear coat which is easily redone. I too am a perfectionist and will not be happy with any uneven gaps.

agree on the gap.... I'm REALLY not happy about the silicone sealant route along the leading edge... seems like a bodge fix imo...but at least its easy removable in the future, i like the idea if the glue but i just cant see you getting this thing to flex enough without potentially damage the tank lid. the 3m and silicone seal along the leading edge seems like the easy route.

This is pretty much the same thing i do EXCEPT I wash the area first with water and soap (McGuiar's) to remove all stuck dirt/debris or whatever your naked eye won't see, AND THEN I use alcohol to rub off all oils for a better adhesion. Next, I heat it up with a blow dryer even if it's 100 degrees outside. Why? Perfectionist. You can line up the spoiler using the tape method he used or whatever helps you have a better alignment. Again, if you don't like how well it sits, remove it and start the process all over. The good thing is that 3M tape and soap is not stupid expensive. DO NOT touch the area you're taping with your bare hands like this guy did! Our fingers have oils and dirt. If you can, use gloves. Quote:

I remember having a gap in my front CF lip, I used 3M tape and it held very well even at 150MPH. Even after car washes every week, with water going in the gaps and wetting the tape, it HELD! Recently that I had repaired (it broke in half when I crashed last year), the guy used fiberglass to repair the center of it and painted it glossy black, leaving the carbon fiber to expose only on the sides where the fangs are. I screwed it on instead only because the gaps would've been even bigger this time around. I'm gonna go do a quick run to autozone to see if I find any silicone/sealant that could work on our spoilers.

what alcohol rubbing solution are you guys using?? i need something readily available, I'm going to fit mine within the next 24 hours!
i was going to leave the actual spoiler on the radiator before fitment for an hour so it literally but gentle warmed through, I'm hoping this will allow it to give enough that i can massage it where needed!!!
