Who is going to buy a BMW i5 with outdated battery generation and only 400V? Nobody.

I am very interested to know what BMW has planned for the upcoming i5 LCI. They will change the design to match the "Neue Klasse" front and they will also implement Panoramic Vision. It would seem strange if they stop there and do not upgrade the battery. But also the G60 is not "Neue Klasse" and the new batteries might not fit.

Friend, normie car buyers barely knew the difference between an I6 and a V8 before, do you think they're going to be bothered about the details of different battery chemistries or electrical system voltages?

The 800V platform will charge a bit faster and go a bit further, and the platform after that will be even better, but we are already well past the stage of "good enough" and improvements past this point are incremental.

400V/800V translates to saving maybe five minutes charging 10-80% in practice. This is not a dealbreaker for people who aren't EV savvy. Hell, I'm pretty EV savvy, and it wasn't one for me.

yes exactly and I add the description that paultan.org did on the launch of the i5

Also new for BMW’s latest EV is Max Performance Charging. Not related to the maximum charging rate, MPC smoothens out the drop off in charging power (typical pattern shoots up to max upon plug-in before reducing gradually), which used to be stepped, like in the iX. Starting off at full charging power is also applicable at higher SOCs, and not just when near empty. These characteristics help you to get more juice in, more quickly. The i5’s architecture is 400V, but with MPC, charging performance is ahead of 400V rivals and gets close to 800V levels, BMW says.

Since i work at a BMW dealership and talk to a lot of customers, i can tell you from my experience that this issue came up quite often in the recent weeks.
Yesterday an elderly couple even considered to buy the new CLA instead of the BMW i4 because of the old tech inside the BMW.

Well this experience does not mean that everybody thinks that way but there are certainly people who think twice before buying an EV car. Especially if they fear they wont get that much back when they try to sell it a few years later.

I could be wrong, of course, but I think a lot of the people considering a BEV now still think of it as "new tech" and so they've done a bit more reading than usual, or they've asked a savvy friend about it. We're somewhere in-between the early adopter and the mass market stage.

Off-topic but regarding the CLA, I hope you told them that if they want a CLA that can actually use most charging stations, they have to wait until 2026.

Oh, thank you for the news article. Ineed I was not aware of that. I told them to literally not buy an EV but rather lease for 2 or 3 years and wait for the Neue Klasse. With that tactic they do not need to sell their car, they just give it back to the BMW bank.

ButI told them that Mercedes EVs look like a piece of soap and the i4 Gran Coupé is far better looking

ynguldyn I know you said no carbon fiber roof for electric M3 but the Nurburgring shots show a double bubble roof / concave roof channel which is probably not possible with glass and does not appear to be camouflage. Do you think it'll be a "natural fiber" roof after all?

Since there are no answers to any of the 8 series questions I've scrolled through I think it's safe to assume it's dead at this point.

Real bummer as I'm struggling to find an enticing replacement for mine. but if it existed we would have seen a prototype by now. AMG GT it is I suppose.

It’s been known for a while that 8 series will be discontinued at the end of this year/beginning of next year just like Z4. This is why BMW never even bothered to upgrade both of these models to iDrive 8. As per the first post here 8 series end of production dates are

F91 (non-US) - 09/25
F91(US)/F92/F93 8/M8 - 10/25
G02 X4 - 11/25
G14/G15/G16 8 - 04/26 (840d - 09/25)

The top post still says "There will still be X3M (G97)", but I think at this point we can assume this will not happen? I think hb confirmed multiple times (e.g. here) that BMW has no (current) plans to build one?

Also, what about the iX3 M60 power figures? You mentioned earlier (and corrected yourself) that the (i)X3 M would have the same power figures, where those relative (two variables looking identical, but absolute values unknown) or do you know them already? I couldn't find them in the top post.

Looks like it. They gave it a platform code but never made the actual car.

I'm not a communications person. But given the timeline I'd expect first weeks of 2026 (big question mark).

That would be my guess aswell. If it starts around March, then early 2026 is a good time.
