Hifi amp replacement with Hifi audio (DSP) amp
Hello everyone, First post here. I have been searching through forums for a few days now. apparently this happens to a lot of people, but i ended up giving my Amp a Bath in the trunk of my car with about a gallon of water.
I drive an '03 Z4 2.5i with hifi audio (Amp PN 65106929689) and have come across a good deal on the Top Hifi Audio (Amp PN 65126963304) will i have to make any fabrications in order to drop this amp into my car due to the fact that the Top Hifi amp is DSP or will everything just be plug and play. Thanks in advance |

Hopefully you'll get some responses - don't assume it's plug and play though. I'd wait until you get more info. I think the Top Hifi system may use optical inputs from the HU, unique to this sytem (and if true, a PITA for replacing the amp).
If your system doesn't have these optical inputs, I'd strongly recommend going to a different amp if possible - there are many better options. This is an area where we need more photos of the amps and harnesses, and wiring diagrams/pin assignments.

ok did some research
here are some pictures and specs that you requested
My current AMP (water damaged) Pictures are attached the other amp can be found here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT HiFi amplifier The HiFi amplifier is designed as an analogue 10-channel amplifier. The 4 input channels are divided via frequency gates and equalizing filters over 10 channels. The HiFi amplifier is installed in the luggage compartment trough next to the vehicle battery. Top-HiFi Amplifier With regard to its functionality, the Top-HiFi amplifier corresponds to the previous DSP amplifier as already used in other model series. The special features on the E85 are the two high voltage output stages (30 V) for the Carver woofers. The Top-HiFi amplifier has 2 analogue inputs (left and right). In addition, the Top-HiFi amplifier features a digital input for the CD changer connection (coaxial cable). This arrangement achieves a higher signal quality. The top HiFi amplifier is installed in the luggage compartment next to the vehicle battery. Both of the Amps have the same pin out: pinout for both amps Plug connector overview Number X-pin, colour Description X10266 42-pin, black Plug connector Amplifier Pin assignments at plug connector X10266 Pin Type Description / Signal type Connection / Measuring notes 1 A Signal, rear left speaker - Subwoofer, left 2 A Signal, rear left speaker + Subwoofer, left 3 A Signal, front left woofer - Woofer, front left 4 A Signal, front left woofer + Woofer, front left 5 E Terminal 30 Fuse F50 6 Not used 7 Not used 8 E Signal, AF radio, rear right + Radio 9 E Signal, AF radio, front right + Radio 10 A Aerial switching signal Aerial diversity 11 A Signal, front right tweeter + Tweeter, front right 12 A Signal, front right tweeter - Tweeter, front right 13 A Signal, rear right mid-range speaker + Mid-range speaker, rear right 14 Not used 15 Not used 16 E Signal, AF radio, rear right - Radio 17 E Signal, AF radio, front right - Radio 18 E/A K-bus signal K-bus connector 19 Not used 20 Not used 21 A Signal, rear right mid-range speaker - Mid-range speaker, rear right 22 A Signal, front right woofer - Woofer, front right 23 A Signal, front right woofer + Woofer, front right 24 A Signal, rear right speaker - Subwoofer, right 25 A Signal, rear right speaker + Subwoofer, right 26 M Ground Ground point 27 Not used 28 Not used 29 E Signal, AF radio, rear left - Radio 30 E Signal, AF radio, front left - Radio 31 A Signal, rear left mid-range speaker + Mid-range speaker, rear left 32 A Signal, rear left mid-range speaker - Mid-range speaker, rear left 33 A Signal, front left tweeter + Tweeter, front left 34 A Signal, front left tweeter - Tweeter, front left 35 Not used 36 Not used 37 E Signal, AF radio, rear left + Radio 38 E Signal, terminal 50 via vehicle immoblizer Radio 39 A Signal, front left mid-range speaker - Mid-range speaker, front left 40 A Signal, front left mid-range speaker + Mid-range speaker, front left 41 A Signal, front right mid-range speaker - Mid-range speaker, front right 42 A Signal, front right mid-range speaker + Mid-range speaker, front right |

nevermind, part #s don't match. there is a chance it won't work, so I'd buy it if the seller offers a return policy. I paid $250 for a used one IIRC

The connector with all the small pins appears to match between the two units. Don't know what the green rectangular thing is on the ebay unit that is not on the unit you have pics of here. Doesn't look like any particularly odd digital or optical inputs on either one. I think small circular connector on the ebay unit is the digital connector for a cd changer.
Where'd you get the pin assignments? Are those for the unit you posted pics of or the other one? What would be really nice is wire colors for the pin numbers because most of the time you identify things by the wire color. Nice work though. The unit in the ebay listing is the amp used on Z4Ms with nav and the "premiun hi-fi package" per my window sticker. Guess it's also the top hifi system.

Pin layout and other info
I did notice that the connectors were similar and Both amps (hifi and top hifi) have the exact same pin assignment. I pulled the list off a different forum describing the differences between z4 audios. And it is my understanding that the green input is for the navigation system. (my car does not have it) I figure if the price stays low I can always purchase the amp and see if it works out. The output of both amps are similar in range i believe so I could always test it out.

The green thing turns out to be a fuse - finally got mine pulled down to look at it closer. I do not see any special optical or otherwise unique inputs to this amp. Since the wiring is basically your normal car wiring, I think swapping amps is at least possible but needs more research.
So, care to say what forum or post a link? I just want to be totally sure that the pin assignments are what they are and are not different between Z4 models. It's makes sense that the harness would be the same between models but I don't want to start tapping wires and find out different. Which are the HU inputs to the amp? Are they the "E signal,AF radio..." pins? If so, I'd think there would be 8 of them, a positive and negative for each channel, and there are only 7 in the above list.
