It's only "short" because the engine revs faster, I would imagine folks with the grind have it more with sport button engaged unless they've gone ESS on the DME

According to realoem, the part numbers are as follows: Z4M = GS6-37BZ - TJEE 3.0si = GS6-37BZ - TJER until 03/2007 ENDED Replaced Previous tranny GS6-37BZ - TJES Also not these are listed as Rmfd which I believe means remanufactuered. Z4M http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...18&hg=23&fg=05 3.0si http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...18&hg=23&fg=05 Not sure what any of this means tho...Just providing the data. |

If it has triple synchos in 2nd then then it should take quite a beating and still be fine. Has the ZHP helped with the shifts? Maybe someone with the knob can chime in and if there are any improvements in the shifting with the knob..

I can attest that the ZHP shift knob does NOT help the issue. If anything, it exacerbates it because it creates a shorter lever requiring more effort for each shift. I've had the ZHP in for several weeks. I put the OEM shift knob back in last weekend and I actually think while the shifts are slightly longer that they are slightly smoother and require less effort. I like the shorter shifts but I'm not sure if the ZHP is going back in or not.

I feel its def worse when sport mode is on. Guess i will deal for now. Is it even worth getting the dealer to look and tinker with it...i find they do more harm than good.

I would love to hear if someone has found a solution. My shift from 1st to 2nd is so notchy as well as 2nd to 1st.
When Sport button is on the shifts become so hard and jerky. Non-sport is much smoother. Last edited by PatJags156; 08-11-2010 at 02:32 PM.. |

I don't think there's anything to get away from the notchiness. It's a characteristic of BMW transmissions and seems especially conspicuous in this particular setup. I found that the ZHP shifter provided a much better height at which to grip the knob and allowed for more precise shifts, and the UUC tranny mounts have made the notchiness much more consistent. The trifecta of ZHP knob, CDV delete (or Zeckhausen CDV), and UUC transmission mounts have made very clear improvements in the transmission setup, which is definitely the Achilles heel of this car.
I did very clearly grind 1>2 for the first time this past Saturday at an autocross (before installing the UUC mounts), shifting probably around 6500-7000K RPM. It totally caught me off guard then and I blamed it on the mounts, but thinking about it now it was more than likely sloppy, rushed shifting more than anything else. When shifting into 2nd, you really need to make sure you're at about the right RPM. You can't let the clutch out too early, and you can't take your foot completely off the gas either, as either is likely going to make your car jerk. You need to feather the throttle some to maintain it at the correct RPM, and sport mode makes the throttle way too touchy to do so easily. |

When shifting at that high of a rpm range u don't really need to feather the throttle since the rpm takes longer to drop to the correct range for the next gear. I find it that I have to slow down my shifts just to have the rpm fall to the correct levels for a smooth shift

Update:
Still have not had a 1-2 grind since the mounts. On previous problem of 3-2 denial at Autox, turns out it was just my method. I guess shifting under stressfull situations at Autox I was pulling the shifter over to the left too much getting into the channel that has reverse. Of course there is no gear below reverse, so the denial of a downward motion on the shifter. Again this never happened on the street. I have done 3 Autox events since that discovery which had several 3-2 shifts and no problems now that I know. I just pull it down real gently into second during hard braking and or turning and no problem now. I can't beleive that is all I was doing. Never had that problem in my 350Z but reverse was to the right of 6th and down so there was no way it could happen on the 350. FYI for anyone still having problems. |

I thought the grinds are related to the synchros? Anyway, I have the mounts...still grind sometimes during hard acceleration.

Doesn't Redline spec their D4 ATF for our tranny as opposed to MTL? Last edited by G80indy; 10-07-2012 at 02:53 PM.. |

^ if we were smart, we should have tried independent testing, instead of both RP & tranny mounts at the same time.

Normaly I would say yes - however, just engaging 1st from a stand still is silky now compared to before so I would say the RP ATF has made a difference too!

bringing back an oldie but goodie thread.
Since I live Indy where it gets cool I have the D4ATF from Redline in the gearbox. But this is what Redline specs for the z4M. You guys are sold on the MTL. But why the deviation? Who here has the RL D4ATF and has grinding? I think for the synchros to operate to design the fluid spec would be critical. http://www.redlineoil.com/tech_article.aspx?id=2

Funny that you also brought this thread back - I wanted to update everyone that I just got the car back after 2 weeks at the dealership for a transmission replacement. The 2nd gear grind got worse over the past few months to the point where engaging 2nd gear at all was a hit-or-miss affair, regardless of how hard I was driving it. Dealer said the synchro failed and they found some metal in the tranny fluid as well. Thank god for the CPO warranty...
New transmission feels super tight, but I haven't tried any high RPM 1-2 shifts yet until it gets some more casual shifts on it. |

Did the mechanic state if this synchro failure was a rare thing or not?

My odometer is about 29500 right now. For those of you who have also experienced consistent grinds, how many miles do you have on your Z4M's? |
