Loud aFe Cold Air Intake
A couple of days ago I installed an aFe Cold Air Intake on my 07 3.0si, this one: aFe 54-11602
At idle revs or below 3000 rpm you can hardly hear any difference but above 3000 rpm the sound becomes deeper. I am definitely satisfied of the sound of the intake (especially when accelerating), I don't feel an increase in power, but that wasn't why I bought one. Only when driving at constant speeds on the highway (cruise control) at a constant speed between 3000 and 4000 rpm, the noise is a little bit too much. It's a monotonous sound that overwhelms everything, once above 5000 rpm the sound level is acceptable again. So my question; can someone explain why there is more sound between 3000 and 4000 rpm than in the higher revs? Or even better, does someone know how to make the intake a little less noisy? On the net I found some things about intakes: - the shorter the intake tube, the more sound (the aFe intake is exactly the same size as OEM). - at only one site the aFe intake was described as loud - a smaller air filter would be quieter I suppose I installed everything correct, but just to be sure I will check tonight and do a test run Last edited by dadoke; 02-18-2010 at 06:31 AM.. |

Depends on the source of the increased noise I guess. The new filter and/or intake box could be less noise-isolating and allowing more of the valve/engine noise to travel up the intake trumpets. Or, the new intake box could simply be vibrating and producing noise (even when connected properly). Or, you might have a loose screw or something! But, if the filter is in place and everything is tightened properly and you have a proper seal overall, and if you like the sound, I wouldn't really care about the why part as much...

I'm looking into the aFe intake for an 07 3.0si.
I wanted to ask if you would recommend the CAI from aFe?

The thing i noticed afterwards is that between 3 and 4000 rpm the car was already louder than at higher revs. I suppose the afe intake is louder at all revs, and that it's just the characteristics of the car that it is louder between 3 and 4000 rpm. |

aFe Intake on my E86
I installed the aFe intake on my 06 Z4 M Coupe and after a day of driving with it, I took it off. I felt I loss power but couldn't confirm it. Since then, I had an ESS tune (which I LOVE!) and was thinking about putting back the aFe system but also thought about calling aFe and asking them if I might've installed the sensor 'backwards' as an afterthought because I can't believe they would sell a system that didn't increase power . . . especially for the price they sell them for.
Here's a link to another forum that discusses a 'loss' in power: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...no-review.html Maybe I should go looking for waterfront property in Arizona instead?? |

i don't know where you are from, but here in Belgium there's a company that does good work doing ecu-tuning, here's a list for all BMW's : http://www.power-plus.be/pdf/bmw.pdf
For the Z4 3.0si it would be 24HP+, Z4m 21HP+ And ofcourse they do some dyno-runs to verify the result |
