Whats a good battery tender?
Looking for something to plug into the car, cigarette lighter or clamp on, either is fine,
Hows the BMW one? Or is there a better brand? Not too sure on this as Ive never had one before

The BMW one is just fine. It's a smart charger. What's the cost? I still have a Deltran (Battery Tender) that my old Ducati out-lived. They're cheap enough to replace every 5 years in you have to anyway.

The BMW Advanced Battery Charger works just fine for our cars. I've got the cig lighter type and it works beautifully. Just make sure you have an extension cord in case your outlet is a ways away.

Deltran Battery Tender = BMW Advanced Battery Charging System. Deltran makes it for BMW.. must be good schtuff. I have one in the garage, used it all the time with my Scirocco when it sat idle for extended periods. Works like a champ.

Quick Q,
Is the cigarette adapter hard wired to the actual control box? Or can you take off the cigarette adapter to put alligator clips on? These are the same as the Deltran ones are the same but you can buy the clips for $7,

Could you disconnect the cigarette adapter and then connect these?

Oh well the Deltran one comes with interchangeable fittings, Not all BMW's can be charged from the cigarette lighter, some require a direct connection to the battery and Id like to have the option of both

I've been looking for one also and was turned on to a model from Griots, not sure who the real manufacture is. Still haven’t pulled the trigger though.

I could be wrong, but it's my understanding that it's to maintain a battery, to keep it charged - especially if you store your car for long periods of time, like me. I just stored my car for the winter, so when I take her out next spring, I don't want a dead battery. The tender only charges, when the battery starts to get low. It flashes a red light while charging, and then goes to a solid green light when fully charged, and goes to standby mode. Or so this is my understanding of how it works.

correct,
It has a built in "microchip" (oooo buzzword) according to BMW that monitors the voltage and maintains and if needed charges your battery through the cigarette lighter and keeps your cars very expensive (for us M guys) battery charged, The price of a new battery from BMW is staggering, and I don't drive the car a lot and I love this little thing, Also the car felt peppier after a charge too, I know I have drained the battery recently just letting the car sit, so the alternator was on double time! I would recommend this to anyone who stores the car or doesn't drive in bad weather (like me)
