M Sport Seats Question
Are all M sport seats heated and motorized?
Looking to replace a heated non motorized seat with a M sport seat would there be plugs there needed for the motors on the M seat? |

They're rare but it is an option.
FWIW most of the seat components are interchangeable. You should be able to build a non-power M seat from your frame. Link to seat project

I specifically went with the non heated/non motorized M sport seat option for mine when I got my car. I don't know for a fact, but I would think that the attachment points would be the same for the manual and motorized versions. If you're going to a non heated/non motorized seat, you should be able to bolt in and not worry about anything else. If you're going to a motorized seat, I think the cars are prewired which means you're still good to go. Hopefully someone with first hand knowledge will be able to provide some info.

You can also use M3 seats, you don't have to just look for Z4 seats.
I believe the seats in that link are from an M3.

I think we had a disconnect there. IINM, inTgr8r is saying you can use the base from any E46 3-series seat to make a non-motorized M-sport seat. I don't think he's recommending installing the E46 M3 seats, which will fit but place the passenger 2-3 inches higher in the car. BlackSapphireZ installed them in his roadster as a lark, so we know they fit, but not well.

After studying the BMW WDS and TIS, and my car using a simple voltmeter I figured how to install them like OEM, including seat memory. I’m not a very technical person, which is why it took few evenings for research and finally a couple of days do the retrofit. And a couple more days to sort out complications (discussed later). Sorry, no DYI or photos, but in short, (normal disclaimers, at your own risk and so forth) the steps included following: 1. Removing battery and old seats 2. Removing various panels to route new wires under the carpet 3. Running a +12V wire from the fuse box (behind the glove box) to respective seat harness connector (the fuses were already there, but no wiring). 4. Running ground wires from a grounding point to respective seat connector. 5. Running a wire from the driver’s seat harness connector to any I-bus wire. This is a very simple bus where you can actually tap to any wire running in the car. To be exactly OEM, you could run a separate wire to connector behind the glove box and dashboard. 6. Installing the new seats 7. Troubleshooting the SRS airbag indicator complicating my install. Once again, after reading fault codes (at my dealers, seat occupancy detector mat) and resetting the SRS light, I figured out, using my voltmeter, that the passenger seat occupancy detector mat has been changed for a completely different one for 2006 Z4s, and that the M-seats indeed were from a 2006 car. The fix was to remove and disassemble the seat to remove seat leather, to install a 2005 seat occupancy detector mat, and to assemble everything again. Now everything looks and feels like OEM, and even the seat memory works. The SRS warning light never reappeared. I cannot remember the exact connector pins involved, but you should double-check the WDS for you’re my anyway. I don’t know whether any non-motorized Z4s are pre-wired for motorized seats, but you could take a look at the connector of your driver’s seat (disconnect the battery first to avoid the SRS-light), open the connector (a.k.a. X275 on WDS, pull black plastic tab) and look for the following pins and (thick) wires: Pin 13 30<29 (terminal 30 continuous voltage +, fuse F29) Red/Brown Pin 14 31L (terminal 31 ground) Brown Hope this information will give you an idea what you might be looking into. And would I, considering all the trouble and complications, do the retrofit again? Definitely yes, they’re worth the effort but I would look for MY 2005 seats, because tearing the seat apart was quite upsetting. DMike |

Wow.... That is a nice retrofit DMike. Sounds like a lot of hassle though!
